"A common field one day, a field of honor forever." The Tower of Voices is still unfinished; only eight of the forty chimes are installed. #nps #findyourpark #neverforget #roadtrip2020 #trekstrikesback (at Flight 93 National Memorial) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD-KkkcF9jB/?igshid=y9nyqem4ipi
Fort Necessity. Not so much a "fort" as a shed with provisions inside a stockade, and site of George Washington's first battle. After surrendering to the French, he was not supposed to return, but shortly after the battle, the British were through the area again on their way to Fort Duquesne. Apparently, Washington and Pittsburgh have animosity back to the late 1700s. 😝 Later in life, Washington returned to his "fort of necessity" and established a tavern along the Braddock Road (National Road). It didn't last long. #nps #findyourpark #roadtrip2020 #trekstrikesback (at Fort Necessity National Battlefield) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD-JaJTloo-/?igshid=2pvt1c4y0me0
The first road funded by the federal government, the National Road was an extension of a road built by Nemacolin of the Delaware (Ohio) tribe. In the early 20th century, when the automobile became more prevalent, it became the road known as US40 (it's northery parallel, US30 was the Lincoln Highway). #roadtrip2020 #trekstrikesback #findyourpark #nps (at Fort Necessity National Battlefield) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD-HjOzl9EY/?igshid=1v4ffkt9etk2c
