TREE|HUB Build
Mariana Fabris, Johanna Mott, Olivia Rumball and Amanda Tooke have been cleaning the reclaimed perspex that Gregory Signs donated.
Andy (Gregory Signs) was very happy that we happened to meet, because otherwise these materials would have gone to the bin. The materials come from a museum in Greenwich and would have an original cost of £500 in total. One industry’s rubbish is TREE|HUB’s treasure!

That’s what we have defined after a 3h conversation between Birute Bikelyte, Candyce Dryburgh, Charlie Evans, Mariana Fabris, Mary Haymaker and myself.
We received the first lot of reclaimed timber this week from Economic Skips and it feels like the project is more tangible than ever. Going through all those timber pieces was like Christmas day.

We are rethinking the format for the conversations that will happen inside TREE|HUB. Today we (Birute Bikelyte, Charles Duffy, Candyce Dryburgh, Isabell Essien, Charlie Evans, Mariana Fabris, Belen Palacios, Katinka Schaaf and Aleks Shilova) recreated the space for an informal chat to test it out. The session involved an improvised conversation chaired by Charlie Evans where one of us impersonated Matt Ward.
For our next session we will all wear jumpsuits.
I can’t take ‘no’ for an answer. I’ve been lucky and I’ve seen most of the things I’ve worked for become reality. I can’t remember many ‘no’s in my life, maybe because I’ve always tried to focus on the “yes” or maybe because I’ve never heard so many as in the past weeks.
Jokes apart, I was extremely confused once I moved to London and people would say “I’m fine” instead of “No, I don’t want any”. So I guess I prefer to get a clear harsh denial than an ambiguous polite answer.
Managing a non-profit project with a very small budget inevitably leads to the need for material sponsors, which, at the same time, leads to hearing the biggest amount of refusal you would have ever imagined. In the past month we’ve had three sponsoring strategies. We’ve researched and prepared tailored proposals for each company, called, dropped in, followed up... I’ve become a writing machine and a walking Colgate smile.
Now I can finally announce that TREE|HUB has off cut acrylics from White Villa and Gregory’s, reclaimed timber from Economic Skips, UK OSB from Grown in Britain and steel from Bronzewood; and I have the ability to cope with rejection (don’t be surprise if I still try to convince you, anyway).
