I love Modern Family but just have discovered it recently. Since that I am binge watching it and my most beloved characters are Phil, Luke, Gloria, Manny and Mitchell. I am close to season 8 now but I must say I got so annoyed how awkward Alex gets treated esp. in season 6 and 7. Maybe it gets better but so far: Yes, she is depicted as "the clever one" but everyone stresses the fact that yes, she is clever but also "nerdy", "boring", "without friends" etc. Yes, in between she has her cool moments and also Haley is jealous from time to time towards her but still. Modern Family still gives the impression that a kid like Alex can not be considered a "cool kid", which is also a big stereotype making kids like her feel awkward and odd. That is one thing.
The other thing is the following:
I really liked the show nevertheless and do it still but then season 7 ep. 14 came, where Haley literally said (after finding Beth's uniform in Andy's closet): "How can he not get over her?! She is a size 6!" A size 6 is 36 in Europe and therefore a S for "small". The word says it: small. S_m_a_l_l_!!!! Aka not big. I know Haley shall be considered as a bit superficial but that quote annoyed me to bits.
I was a solid 36 to 38 at my upper body as a youth and had 38 to 40 in my trousers. I put 58 to 62 kg on the scale which was according to the BMI scala right in the middle of normal weight for my age as a teen and early twen with the height of 169 cm.
But because of damn quotes likes that I always felt fat, although I had super skinny arms, little boobs and looked thin in the face and with 58 kg even started to look anorectic.
That was because in Hollywood movies, no wanted or hip girl was ever putting 60 kg on the scale and surely never had size medium. Even "small" would be considered "too fat".
Examples for that were movies like Bridget Jones 1 and the series Scrubs, were Elliot consideres herself to big with way over 170 cm and 53 kg. According to the BMI, with that, she would be underweighted.
Yes, in the series Dr. Cox tells her that she is too thin and yes, Mark Darcy loves Bridget. But young girls apparently still get told that they are too fat with having size 6 aka "small" or 36.
That makes me super angry! Especially because your size does not tell how thin you are! I have a thin friend who is quite tall and therefore always needs "large" in her clothing cause her body is very long! A woman with big boobs is also surely no size zero.
It is frustrating me very much what the media does sent out to females even through otherwise lovely shows! It affected me for years and I can see how much it affects others now. For example my 9 years younger cousin. She has a gorgeous figure and is very beautiful but because her sister is a tad thinner, her mother points, that she is "normal not thin". But that is not true. She is perfectly thin according to normal measurements and standards. Her sister could even be considered too thin. It frustrates me that she has to endure such shit and then on top from her own mother, cause her self esteem is not big at all.
So I am sad, that also Modern Family is so superficial in the cases I named. Cause otherwise the show has, especially with Phil, a very cute and loving character.
I wonder when the media will finaly send out to girls and boys that they are just good as they are, as long as they are somewhat healthy!?! πππ
