is it more important to focus on what books etc tell you about gems herbs etc for spells, or is it more important to trust your gut?
I would say a bit of both.
Some books will have vital information about the items, things like if they are poisonous or not, if you should or shouldn’t burn them etc.
But as far as correspondences are concerned, I would say your best judgement is more beneficial than a magic book.
