Yep. That's not English. That's not even close to English.
That's French. With mistakes (honey,"Honi"? really? - but that's not the point of this rant), but still French.
When I read that, guess what? Silly little me went lurking around The Internet with this sentence in hand.
Believe me  dearies when I say I wasn't disappointed. Although I didn't expect this little motto and the bad yet official attempts at translating it into English to have had the galls of making me cranky for the past hours.
And here is why.
I have a saying when there is something I want to dig a bit more in (ie: pretty much everything I happen to read), and it is such :
Wikipedia is your friend.
Not Google. Not any other Bing or shit. Wikipedia.

Which is why I had a brain freeze when I saw the translations offered on the page dedicated to the aforementioned motto :

French is a very gendered language. Like. Very.Gendered.
It is either IL or ELLE. For people and things. And concepts.There is no in-between (officially used in every day life yet). If you're talking about someone, and you don't know their gender, the default is "IL". Masculine. There is no neutral. (Well. "IL" is considered the neutral one but that's another issue entirely).
On the other hand, we have English.
It is a very nice language in comparison. You can use He, or She, or It (when it's an object) or THEY ! As a singular neutral pronoun !!! Like Kudos to y'all! It's the best thing ever.
Now, back to our motto.

You're going to think I'm bonkers because clearly, here, there are no "il" or "elle" so why did I write an entire novel about it ?
1) I'm bonkers.
2) One of the few -so few- things in the French language that is "neutral" when referring to someone/something is QUI.
"Qui" is a relative pronoun, like "whom", "which" etc.
QUI is neutral in French. It can be used for anything and everything.
QUI IS NEUTRAL IN FRENCH.
So my big question to y'all big bois out there translating from French to English :
why on Earth would you use HE/HIM when you could have gone full perfect respectful translation of the original with THEY/THEM ????????????
Is it because it's the motto of the Order of the Garter? And these big gents are all supposedly manly men/knights defending manly values ? Or because nowadays it's mostly an army thing apparently accross english-speaking states?

IF the original creator of that motto wanted you to have translated the subject to HE/HIM, they could have very well written in the first place "Honi CELUI QUI mal y pense" (celui = him).
But no, no they definitely wrote QUI alone. Like an independent autonomous NEUTRAL RELATIVE PRONOUN. It's not complicated to translate to English. IT REALLY ISN'T.
