lovely will stoops to folly in the hyacinth garden
By the waters of Leman I sat down and wept
. . . . .
It was April, the cruelest month. It was raining. The world was falling apart.Â
It was chaos and fiery blood spilled over the last dregs of snow. The moon flashed between black clouds making shell-pink rivulets in streaming water glisten. The unexpected rain and late-melting snow was not cold enough to damp down his wrath.Â
Willâs breath steamed in the air, plumes unfurling from the ravenstag behind him and from Hannibal beside him. The three of them looked at the body at their feet, four bloody hands and one carmine-smeared mouth.Â
. . . . .Â
Days before, the man had come by the lakeside docks Will toiled away on, repairing motors and scraping hulls and grunting out his Cajun-colored French to his clients along Lac LĂŠman. Heâd come with expectations of subservience â an American tourist with a sly face and a fake tan, white teeth like a picket fence around an empty lot. Heâd come about getting his boat looked at, but took one look at Will and his scars and instead fixed his mind on adding to the damage he saw on the twitchy figure in front of him.
Was it Willâs scars or his untrimmed hair or the vulnerable curve of his lower lip without a beard to camouflage it?Â
Was it the tender curve to his hip as he hefted his box of tools around, sturdy thighs and small boots striding, determined, down each boatslip?
He could see Willâs softness and he wanted to smear his thick fingers around in Willâs tenderness. He grinned as he used every syllable of every breath to break Will against the sharp flint of his hatred. His smiles were camouflage. His words were poison.Â
It was 6,000 kilometers from Wolf Trap to the little hamlet of Saint-Gingolph. There were 16 centimeters from Will to the wolf in wolfâs clothing. There was both the span of 20 years and the antagonism of the past 20 minutes and time and place disappeared as he was made to feel small and young and in-between again.
Willâs blood pulsed in his ears, the chambers of his heart echoed the wavelets along the shore, and the manâs words turned into static and foam. He thought about death and rebirth and the cliff and the knife. His fingers dipped between shirt buttons to stroke the scars in the middle of his chest, the valley of bone and flesh and transformation and his rabbiting heart â he couldnât hear the words anymore but he felt the spite and filth from the manâs sludgy tide of abuse. The taste of iron was in his mouth and he spit out the nails between his lips, dropped his hammer, and walked away.
It was April, the roots of his past exposed by a man who didnât even know him. Will stumbled down the road and cut through naked copses, the dead trees his camouflage, his eyes fixed before his feet. He came home to his honey, his Hanni. They drank sweet coffee and talked for an hour, Willâs bitter voice cracking and Hannibalâs hands holding him close.Â
âThought I was stronger,â he managed to grit out, his throat tight in rage and despair. âWent through red shadows and fire with you, fought all my demons and with the scars to prove it. How could he see me, when no one else even thinks to question it? Even without a beard or a binder, Iâm myself and a man. My nerves are bad. Stay with me, tonight. Donât go. Donât go.â
Will shuddered and held white-knuckled onto Hannibalâs shoulders â today they were draped in blue silk and chrysanthus satin, soft soft against his sharp heart and sharper cheekbones. Hannibal soothed him, would not let him become unmoored.Â
âWill, my Will. I would not go elsewhere, not now, not ever. You who gave me hyacinths first a year ago. Do you remember? I was neither living nor dead, adrift in my mind palace, the walls unmade and rocking like the ship you stole us away in. I woke to the smell of flowers â purple, yellow, blue, and white, gathered for me in hands that both broke and mended me. Reproach and apology and love and all of the sincerity in your heart stark across your face. Beloved, the hyacinths survived the winter and are ready to bloom again. Do you understand, beloved?â
Hannibal kept vigil until dawn, ready to fight all the sons of Hypnos against the black visions they might bring. Will dreamt that night of nothing but calm waves across an opaque blue sea.
. . . . .
Willâs grief had passed after that unexpected bout of weeping and Hannibal had helped him rebuild his forts. They followed the man the next few nights, in pools of darkness beneath the eaves, at fine tables in suits of anthracite and ice. He wasnât hard to miss, his glowing teeth drawing moths from the lamps and his voice lingering in the fog. Hannibal traveled at the edge of Willâs shadow, content to observe as he struck. The man didnât put up much resistance â he was sluggish and drunk, glutted on overpriced wine and red meat and his own good opinion of himself. They shoved him into a wheelbarrow, wrapped in a tarp, and let the cold rain clean the blood from the rock Will had struck him with.Â
Willâs retribution had been glorious. Vicious. He spat the torn flesh of the manâs throat onto the ground, refusing to make use of his hateful flesh. Hannibal couldnât resist a quick press of cold lips against blood-hot ones. Will knelt in the softened soil and began to dig with his hands. He didnât feel the cold even as his body shook and his shirt steamed.Â
Baptized in heartsblood and cold rain, Hannibal and Will were radiant.Â
Hannibal stripped away the manâs sodden clothes, his jewelry, his teeth and took heavy sĂŠcateurs to each limb of his wretched body, pruning him down to his base materials. His body wasnât fit to consume, but it would nourish nonetheless â blood and bone made for fine fertilizer after all. Hannibal grabbed a shovel to help now that Will had gotten down to harder, colder soil, the last vestiges of winter numbing his hands.Â
The rain had tapered off at last, the setting moon framed by the stone posts of their garden wall. Weariness laid heavy on their skin but they kept going, turning the soil, mixing the worthless pig into earth and ashes to make a rich mix for their flowerbeds. Will carefully nestled the corms of the hyacinths into the ground, pressing them gently into place in apology for the disturbance and cold night air.
They came back so late it was early, trailing loam and leaves from the hyacinth garden, arms full of wet clothes, hair wet and plastered along icy skin. A hot bath restored feeling to aching hands and they slept as those who are dead, dreamless and peaceful.Â
. . . . .
That corpse you planted last year in your garden, âHas it begun to sprout? Will it bloom this year? Or has the sudden frost disturbed its bed?
The hyacinths that year were glorious.

Adapt. Evolve. Become.: The Genderqueer Fandom of NBC's Hannibal - SECOND EDITION!
In 2023 we released a fan-led volume of fanworks by and about trans non-binary, genderqueer and otherwise non-cis Fannibals. Now we're back by popular demand, to create a second edition and YOU can be involved!
We've extended submissions! You can now submit until February 28th 2025!
We'd especially love to see more:
Essays
non-fiction
personal pieces
memes
cosplay
fanart
We're still open to fanfic but as we have quite a lot on that front, we'd love to see other types of submissions.
SUBMIT HERE
NBC's Hannibal has resonated with many queer fans, and we know that being in the Hannibal, Hannigram and Hannibal Extended Universe fandom, and the support of Fannibals, has been part of many people's gender identity journeys. We want to capture that in a fandom led volume of non-fiction, featuring essays, creative nonfiction, personal accounts and art.
You may have even seen that Hugh Dancy was gifted a copy and had a very thoughtful conversation about the interpretation of Will Graham as a trans man.
IF YOU WISH TO SUBMIT WE URGE YOU TO READ THE EXISTING EDITION FIRST! You can read or download free here!
WHO should submit: Please ONLY SUBMIT IF:
you are aged 18 or over. For the sake of legalities, we are only accepting submissions from those legally considered adults in the region of publication - UK.
you are transgender, non-binary, genderqueer or otherwise non-cis.Â
OR you have a close relationship (sibling, partner etc) with someone who is transgender, non-binary, genderqueer or otherwise non-cis.
NB: The reason for the edition of cis creators is as a result of the feedback on the first edition regarding how much it spoke to people who had trans relatives or a trans partner and how it resonated with them and their (often) non-fandom partner/relative. We wanted to give them a chance to voice the impact of the show and fandom on their lives as people with close relationships with trans people.
WHAT submissions do we want:
Fanfiction (100 to 5000 words)
Fanart (including comics)
Personal piece / statement / testimony (pref. under 3000 words)
Creative non-fiction (up to 5000 words)
Essay (up to 5000 words)
Cosplay (photos of yourself in cosplay and/or instructions/tips on how to make trans friendly cosplay)
Other (any form of art, photography or writing not covered here including crafts, memes, playlists???)
Theme:Â Via one of the above mediums, we want you to share with us in as much or little detail as youâd like, your journey as a non-cis Fannibal in the Hannibal fandom, and/or the impact NBCs Hannibal has had on your gender journey.Â
A few points for consideration you may wish to explore:Â
Has the show and/or being part of the fandom helped you explore your gender, or made you feel more confident in expressing it - even if only online.Â
Has the fandom helped you with your transition and/or medical needs, such as donating for trans-clothing or surgeries?Â
Do you want to write an essay exploring the connection between NBCs Hannibal and non-cis fans? Or explore the trans-coding of Francis Dolarhyde?
Do you want to submit fic or art of Hannibal, Will or another character that expresses how you feel about your own gender identity?
PLEASE NOTE: if your submission is successful you are welcome to use your real name or an online handle for authorship, but you will have the option to publish anonymously or under a pseudonym if you would prefer.Â
YOU CAN submit multiple works. We may publish up to two pieces from each person if they are different types, e.g. one fanart AND one essay.
Timeline:
Submission period: ENDS 28 February 2025
Editing: March 2025
Final edited copies for proof by 31st May 2025
Publication: July 2025
Compensation: As a fan-led project we do not have any funding and so cannot offer monetary compensation. All contributors will receive at the least an e-copy of the collection. If we are able to establish funding (potentially via Kickstarter) we may be able to send each contributor a print copy, but will not be able to confirm until further in the process and cannot guarantee this.
If funding is not available, we will be able to offer contributors reduced cost print copies by charging only cost price. However, given the quality of the art printing of the print copies, this will still be a significant cost.
Content Restrictions:Â
Contributors must be transgender, non-binary, genderqueer or otherwise non-cis, OR in a close relationship with someone who is transgender, non-binary, genderqueer or otherwise non-cis.
Contributions must relate to NBCs Hannibal, HEU and/or the fandom
The contribution must be original. Previously published works may be considered, such as existing fanfic and fanart.
ABSOLUTELY NO GENERATIVE AI.
Explicit works welcome, but please give details in the sign up form, especially for any visual media.
It should go without saying, but we will not accept bigotry and hate speech: We may consider works that feature these things but do not glorify them. For example, we will consider works that discuss transphobia but not works that are transphobic.
