` this is what i was trained for, i think, ` reyna looks at me as if iâve grown an extra head. wouldnât be awful, that; it might freak krios out enough for me to buy a few extra seconds of time when i eventually got up there. mmm, or maybe not. the silhouette of the titan waiting at the mountainâs peak had horns, great curling horns, and a massive hulking figure â a big dude like that wouldnât be scared of anything. ` no, itâs â itâs what i was raised for. you were right about that. `
` i was angry, ` reyna splutters. the action is so not reyna - like, it actually distracts me from the gnawing panic. just for a moment. ` i was angry a - about the harbour ghost. i didnât mean what i said to you â ` ` angry or not, you were right, ` i want to reach out, squeeze her arm. tell her that iâm not blaming her for this.Â
when she had exploded at me, back during that tiny quest â sheâd said that the only reason the romans kept me, trained me, put me in such important roles with such important jobs, was because i had the fortune to be born a son of jupiter. thinking back on it, she had been very right, but it had still hurt. now? now i understood. of course the legion kept me, trained me to be the best soldier and leader i could. i had been born with immense power, and it needed to be honed â it needed to be cultivated so it could be properly used to defend the camp.
they werenât training a leader, they were building a weapon. looking up at the mountain face, the threat that waiting for us all â the titan â i knew this had to be my purpose.
` donât go up there alone, ` reyna urged, voice strained. ` you canât fight that alone. ` ` iâm going to buy us more time, ` ` youâre going to get killed. ` ` better me than the whole legion, rey. you know iâm right, donât you? look at our army â if something happens, goes wrong, weâre depriving new rome of itâs only defence and itâs future. `
a sea of young faces gathered below looked back at us. i could see my cohort â my friends â making their way to the head of the crowd. i had to move fast.
` lead them back down. help fortify defences around the camp. i know lupa and her wolves will help,` ` jason â ` ` the legion is yours now. okay? itâs yours to lead, a - and i know youâll keep them safe â ` ` jason! ` ` reyna, please, just â ` i could see the apprehension a little too clear on gwenâs face. they were getting too close, and if they tried to stop me, i know i would have caved. there was no risking their lives. not now, not ever.
reyna managed to cut through the storm of thoughts by hugging me. everything went still, even the din from below calmed for a moment. if i was scared and weak before, a newfound strength seemed to wash over me now. the kind of strength that fixed my resolve to buy the legion more time. sadly, not the strength to let her go too soon.
` tell my cohort iâm sorry. ` ` i will. `
