Brittany walked into her bedroom in a haze. Never in a million years had she expected this to happen. It had been a shock to find out they had gotten married on a drunken night out in Vegas, but it was even worse to find out they weren't. Over the past couple months she had gotten so used to refering to Sam as her husband, to tell people she was married when they asked, and to defend herself when they judged her for getting married in Vegas. And now, because of one little detail they turned out not to be married at all. Sitting down on her bed, she stared at the wall. Dozens of feelings rushed through her, but none were strong enough to come out like that. How could they not have known this? Why did they have to find out through her parents, in a certain way? She shook her head. This was too confusing. It didn't make any sense. She looked up when she heard footsteps approaching her. Sam. Running her hand through her hair, she shrugged one shoulder. "I don't know what to do now."
Sam had no idea what to do or think. One minute he had honestly thought he was married to the love of his life and the next, bam, he wasn't. Even though things technically weren't different it felt like they were because despite whatever happened in his life while they were in New York, he knew Brittany was the one constant thing he had. But now even though they were still together and happily in love, everything just felt different and Sam didn't know why. Even though he wasn't entirely sure what he could say, Sam followed Brittany up to her bedroom and sat down beside her on her bed before picking up her left hand and linking their fingers together, desperately trying to ignore the feel of the cool metal ring against his skin. "Honestly, neither do I. We're still together and in love though, right? Even if we're not married anymore."
Brittany looked at their conjoint hands and the silver rings on their fingers. "Of course we're still together and in love," she said, squeezing Sam's hand. Of course they were. Just like before, when they'd thought they'd gotten married and it didn't matter because they still loved each other more than anything, just like that did it not matter that they weren't married in the end. They would still love each other. "Just because we're not married anymore doesn't mean we can't love each other. Although I might have to call that one company that asked about my relationship status and I told them I was married, because apparently I'm not." She leaned her head against Sam's shoulder and let out a soft sigh. "We have to change our Facebook statuses too. Those are important for how your relationship plays out, apparently."
Sam blinked slowly at Brittany before trying out a smile, knowing that she was right. Even though the rings didn't mean anything any longer, their love for each other was just as strong as ever. "That might be a good idea. They'll probably get confused about everything though because I sure am confused myself," he joked, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head as she rested it on his shoulder. "Facebook definitely is pretty important. Although we're gonna have to explain this whole mess to everyone. But I'm sure they're smart enough to figure it out." He shrugged and glanced down at their intertwined fingers once again, giving the silver rings a bittersweet smile because they were the whole cause of the mess in the first place. If only their drunk selves didn't put them on their wedding fingers then everything would be just as it was before Vegas. "Does this mean we should put the rings on a different finger?"
Brittany nodded in agreement at Sam's comment about being confused. This whole situation was confusing, and she didn't expect either of them to fully understand it. Leaning into Sam when he kissed her head she let out a soft giggle. "It's okay to be confused, as long as you still love me you can be everything." Looking up at him she ran her hand through his hair, watching it bounce back in shape as she let go. "I wonder if they'll be relieved we're not actually married. Quinn was kind of rude about it when I told her the first time, even though she's married herself which is kind of hypo...critical. But I mean, my parents looked kind of relieved, didn't they?" She thought back to the look on their faces and decided they looked either relieved or just average, which didn't help much but at least they weren't mad. She followed Sam's gaze at their rings and shook her head. "They can be a promise ring, even though they're actually wedding rings. We can pretend they're promise rings, or something like that. Pre-engagement rings." She cracked a smile. "They can be all of those things and we can totally wear them the same. I think that's how it works."
Sam smiled as Brittany ran her fingers through his hair, liking the way they felt and the way his hair just pinged straight back to where it was before she touched it even though he had no idea why. "The one thing I'm definitely not confused about is just how much I love you," he said softly, licking his lips quickly to dampen them as he listened to her speak. "A couple of people seemed like they disapproved about this but I never cared 'cause it has nothing to do with them. Do your parents like me? Because I dunno whether them being relived about you not being married to me is a good thing or not." Sam frowned for a moment as he thought before shaking his head ever so slightly. It didn't seem like her parents disliked him unless they were awesome actors, especially when they had been nice to him so far. "I guess these rings just show that I'm yours and you're mine whatever we want to call 'em, right?"
Brittany gazed at Sam as he told her he loved her, and she, if possible, fell even more in love with him than she already was. Thinking back on every decision she'd made the past year, she couldn't say she regretted them anymore. Sure, she still felt bad about hurting Santana the way she had, but being with Sam somehow made that worth it. She loved him so much that every time she looked at him she felt her stomach flutter, as if a thousand butterflies woke up and started flying around. "I love you, too," she whispered, squeezing his hand again. Her brow furrowed as she thought about Sam's question, before shaking her head firmly. "Of course they like you. I think they were just relieved because we're not married. They probably think we're too young to be married. It doesn't have anything to do with you," she promised him, softly pressing her lips to his cheek, curling up against his side. "Sounds about right. I mean, I'm still going to marry you one day, just not now. We'll wait a couple years and then think about it again, right?"
Sam could somehow tell that Brittany was thinking the exact same thing as he was just by the look in her eyes as she stared at him. The two of them had been through a lot yet they had still come out better and stronger on the other side and were still as in love with each other now as they were at the very beginning. Even though they'd been together for a long time, every time he looked at his girl he fell in love over and over again. "I guess that makes sense... especially as I didn't ask for their permission to marry you which wasn't right. Maybe this time I can romantically propose to you and we can have an awesome wedding," he said ruefully before a grin appeared on his face as he thought back to their End-Of-The-World-Marriage from what felt like years and years back. For some reason, their "weddings" never seemed to work properly so he just hoped that it would work third time around. "We'll get the marriage thing right one day, I swear we will."

I mean she needs a filter
Excuse me? What makes you think that, in any universe, that you saying that to me is okay? I've been nice to you, Sam, but I really don't have to be. Not anymore. Don't test me and don't talk shit about my girlfriend.
