There MIGHT be a toyol in my house but instead of gold and valuable items it steals my kuih
FUCKASS TOYOL
Toyol
Origin: Indonesia, Malaysia
Classification: undead, cursed human, goblin, familiar
Appearance: a toyol looks the same as a normal small child but with sharp teeth, cloudy red eyes, pointy ears, and grayish green skin, they prefer to scurry around the world naked or nearly naked and when they are spotted with clothing they are often wearing all black.
A Toyol is a familiar created by shaman created from the body of a dead infant they bring good luck and wealth to their master by bringing misfortune to others they encounter by helping their guardian pilfer half their wealth or performing other mischievous acts they are commanded to do.
Toyols are playful and enjoy finding or being given sweets, toys, and clothing, their small size and childish behavior means they are harmless to humans.
Fetus spirits
Have been working on a TTRPG adventure. A small town has been destroyed by a literal act-of-god; there is point-crawl through its ruins.
Writing this town meant building two versions of it in my head:
The town, still living. What secret dramas fuel it?
The town, destroyed. What fires continue to burn?
And figuring out how to use the latter's fires to imply the former's fuel.
+++
One of several locations in the main road through town:
TALLY HOUSE
A tent of bright textiles and fine rugs, where traders wined and haggled. Now flattened.
From under the fabric: sobbing. Manan, a young boy. “Bad babies took mummy away!” Fetus spirits dragged her to the Yellow House attic (pg xx).
+
One of the houses in a wealthy hilltop neighbourhood:
YELLOW HOUSE
Turmeric-caked columns. Missing roof; disaster has flung it elsewhere (pg xx).
Ground floor: a medicine cabinet, fallen on its face. Salvageable tinctures and powders enough to treat 6d6 persons.
Second floor: a chest. Hair combs and scarves and toys—one hundred personal items townsfolk previously thought lost.
Out back: Tun Dek, the town physician, decapitated. In the roll of his sarong: a cord strung with dried infant pinkies. Fetus spirits (pg xx) obey this cord’s holder.
+
Finally, a location on the forested edge of the valley:
YELLOW HOUSE ATTIC
The roof of Tun Dek’s house (pg xx) landed here. Upended like a beached ship.
In front: a woman grilling rats. This is Kirata, mother to Manan (pg xx) and Maran (pg xx). Tied to her ankle: a rope, disappearing into the attic.
In the attic: hammocks and cages; would fit infants. A jumble of broken toys. Kirata is an unwilling servant to thirteen fetus spirits (pg xx).
+
Maran, Kirata's other son, is not found in the town's ruins, due to some magic bullshit.
Elsewhere, in the adventure's encounter table / bestiary, is an entry for fetus spirits, a creature very loosely based on the toyol:
FETUS SPIRIT HD 1, as light armour, knife d4. Morale 5. Surrounding, stealing, taunting.
Teenage urges in the bodies of hairless tofu-hued one-year-olds.
Missing pinkies. Invisible at night. The doctor Tun Dek (pg xx) created them from babies stillborn or aborted; used them as spies, petty thieves.
To acquire baby corpses, Tun Dek must have had a votary accomplice.
+++
So here is:
A monster / encounter around the ruins;
Location(s): a rich doctor's house getting blown up due to disaster befalling the town, inadvertently setting his dirty secrets loose;
Background: A rich doctor with a dirty secret: he turns the town's stillborn children into monsters, and uses them to steal townsfolk's personal effects;
A powerful magic item: a cord that confers control over the monsters;
An explicit hook: a son looking for his mother, kidnapped by monsters;
An implied hook: it is elsewhere established that this town practices cremation; the doctor was working with a corrupt priest, who helped him spirit dead babies away from their rightful burial. Is this dude still alive? What else is he up to?
Spread across the breadth of the point-crawl---hopefully enticing players to tug on its various threads.
Also tried to practice economy. "Tun Dek makes fetus spirits!" is a minor detail, totally unrelated to the adventure's main themes. The passages above represent the total wordcount I allowed myself to spend on it.

The Toyol is said to be a reanimated baby brought back to life through black magic by a shaman and people who purchase Toyols from these shamans usually use them to steal things. Toyols are said to not be very intelligent and are easily distracted by beans and marbles and they will play with these items forgetting to steal what they were sent for however if things do go missing, if you put needles under your money and valuables, the Toyol won’t touch them as they are afraid of being hurt by needles; and Toyols are also afraid of their reflections so if you put mirrors around your house, the Toyol will be too scared to steal anything. There are 31 traits that all Toyols share. They protect their owner and the souls of babies so those babies can become Toyols as well, they will kill if provoked usally by slashing at the heart and hate abandonment, they can pass through solid objects, they posses their owners in order to eat raw meat which makes them stronger, Toyols are made easily jealous, a Toyol’s power get stronger each year, Toyols have to be fed blood on the 14th of each month, they gather information for their owner, they can help men seduce women, they can turn against their owner, you are taught how to control the Toyol by the shaman who sold it to you, if it is not well taken care of it will complain to the shaman who created it, to get rid of a Toyol you have to bring it back to the shaman to take care of, Toyols want to be reborn, if they bottle that controls them is broken they will go stronger but impossible to control, the bottle has to be put under the moon and have blood dripped into it on the 14th of each month, you have to be very specific with the orders you give it or it will become confused, it cannot make predictions, it likes to be treated like a baby, to tell if a house has a Toyol you need to make a line of toy cars and if they move on their own then the house has a Toyol, the Toyol and the owner must eat together, a Toyol cannot be abandoned over seas, the Toyol and its owner share a bond to the Toyol drinking the owners blood, they tell the owner if they aren’t being treated right, Toyols are sometimes passed down to other family members to help the next generation, when a Toyol is brought back its presence is not felt at first, if a Toyol has been brought back for a long time it will start to look like a man or a woman, male Toyols are more common than female ones, owners buy baby clothes for the Toyol to wear, if the Toyol finds out that the owner is trying to destroy it the Toyol will make sure that it and the owner die together. Toyols also love to drink warm milk in the mornings, sweets and toys, black candles with mantras, and their owners blood.

Toyol, A Sneaky Spirit With A Sweet Tooth
Malay folklore describes the Toyol as green child-like spirit. Some say Toyols resemble goblins, with animal-like teeth.
It is playful but is usually manipulated to steal from others or cause mischief. Usually kept in a jar, these spirits are used for petty or minor crimes.
Some believed that this spirit uses its blood red yes to see through walls or barriers, giving it easy access to cupboard or storage areas to steal money or jewellery.
After stealing, usually child-like footprints and fingerprints are found at the crime scene, if anything at all.
