House of shadows - an experiment in #tropicalmodernism. This house is designed as a large open plan space and is entirely wrapped with concrete fins. This allows interior space to be animated by moving shadows the entire day. The concrete fins are inspired from #towerofshadows in Chandigarh by #lecorbusier. designed by @ameyzing_architect #india #awesome #архитектура www.amazingarchitecture.com ✔ www.facebook.com/amazingarchitecture A collection of the best contemporary architecture to inspire you. #design #architecture #picoftheday #amazingarchitecture #style #nofilter #architect #arquitectura #luxury #concept #life #cute #architettura #interiordesign #photooftheday #love #travel #instagood #fashion #beautiful #archilovers #architecturephotography #home #house #amazing #معماری (en Mumbai, Maharashtra) https://www.instagram.com/p/B03yf99lasN/?igshid=ge8ijirvahly

#Repost @galeriepatrickseguin ・・・ Le Corbusier, Tower of shadows, 1950-65, Chandigarh (India). The Tower of shadows, also known as the Tower of 4 horizons, is a prime example of studies around the sunlight. Erected on the esplanade of the Capitol in Chandigarh, the tower rises close to the 24 solar hours' diagram. As the Open Hand and the Monument to the Martyrs, the Tower is a symbolic attribute of the Capitol that bears no specific function. It could be seen as an invitation to meditation and a kind of manifesto for the Sun-shutter, demonstrating, as Le Corbusier pointed out, that "the sun can be controlled at all four cardinal points of an edifice and even manipulated in a hot country to reduce temperatures" #lecorbusier #towerofshadows #chandigarh #india #architecture #galeriepatrickseguin (à Chandigarh - The City Beautiful) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ_DRD_FUV4/?igshid=11ag0re3gsjf

Like a modern romantic ruin Le Corbusier’s ‘Tour d’ombres’ (or Tower of Shadows) in Chandigarh is a concrete pavilion in the Capitol area of his modern city, sited between the Palace of Justice and the Parliament building. A symbolic structure, it demonstrates Le Corbusier’s theories of sun control and was inspired by 18th century Indian astronomical observatories:
"A very open hall, very high and shadowy(...) the sun can be controlled at all four cardinal points of an edifice and even manipulated in a hot country to reduce temperatures"
The brise-soleil walls on three faces, East, West and South, provide shade from the searing heat of the sun, whilst the North side is open, framing a view of the enormous plaza. The rhythm of the spacings of the brise-soleil walls varies according to the situation, allowing the study of the sun by means of the shadows. The building is aligned on the north-south axis to interrupt the symmetry of the square. It was designed in c.1952 (there is a model in the MOMA collection) but when I visited in March it was difficult to tell whether the building was unfinished, or had become a ruin in the process of restoration.
