Writing group today was grand. I walked in at 8:17 with a splitting headache and apologies for being late. But they smiled an said I had no room for excuses. I do come from Harlem after all. This is true. It takes me 3 trains to get there and I somehow manage to convince myself that the forty minute ride really only takes thirty...which works out to being seventeen  minutes late. Funny math...yawn...bourbon latte please...then I listen to the fringes of Psalms 103. Then we talk about book ideas, falling asleep last night (or failing to) and lessons from a stranger's Zen master on letting go. Then we practice and write poems in each others' books. I let go of two poems, written in seven minutes, in Amy's book that Josh said were really good and now I'm semi-sad because I'll probably never see them again. But it is a good lesson: letting go. And not just of poems, but also of worries and fears and failures to be prompt.

+ joined a writing group that meets for coffee on the Lower East Side. Here's tomorrow's poem about what a day in the life looks like for me. there's a reason I'm writing it the day before it's due. Working as a writer full time instead of being in school isn't the easiest thing to write a poem about.
