Carlo Bugatti– and Studley-Inspired Tool Chest

Inspired by the fantastical work of Italian furniture designer Carlo Bugatti and the H.W. Studley chest, Ryan wanted to build something that captured the same sort of complexity and design whimsy. This chest was some three years in the making, with no computer design or mockups used. “While some of the more complicated tool holders were worked out full scale on paperboard, most of the cabinet was designed ‘on the fly,’ with each part taking its cues from previous ones, and built largely using the hand tools it now contains,” he said.

I've just completed a machinist style tool chest made from teak, figured anigre drawer pieces with marine grade plywood bottoms. I made the carcass of the cabinet with hand cut dovetails. There's a clever slot to slide my framing square into the cabinet. I now have a place to put all of my handtools, including a few tools that belonged to my grandfather as well as my great grandfather. Woodworking goes back in my family many, many generations. To be able to do this kind of work adds real meaning to my life, knowing that I've been carrying on a family tradition and standing in my ancestors footsteps.
