The ever so energetic, Tom Parry from the sketch group Pappy’s, starts off his solo show by playing a couple of notes on the trumpet. He then proceeds to tell us that he won’t be using the trumpet again. It’s this sort of zealous silliness that the whole hour is based on. The show is loosely built around 5 jokes and 6 thoughts which he hands out to two audience members and uses this as a prompt to bring his head back from his joyful chaotic excursions.
The crux of the hour concentrates on Parry’s preoccupation with fancy dress parties. He loves it and he’s not afraid to talk about it. He’s happy to dress up and he’s happy to look ridiculous if it involves dressing up in a sheet and especially if it involves turning up to a Cambridge University formal as a ping-pong table.
In addition to fancy dress parties, Parry loves neologisms which include chirpsing (a subdued form of flirting), plezsch trezsch (you work it out), spree (killing and shopping) and a wordplay appropriate for Edinburgh- turret and Tourette (the Tourette involuntarily shouts out castle).
Parry’s show reminds us that comedy does not have to be dark to be taken seriously. Without ever touching on the issue, Parry’s struggle with mortality and angst is conveyed here through his exuberant foolishness and charm.
