Enter the Void's Title Sequence
A fast-paced compilation of typefaces, all very different, inspired by films, flyers, and neon signs to announce the tone of the film. Gaspar Noe's work is visceral and provocative which is only fitting that his title sequence came with its own health warning the credit sequence prepares the viewer for the subsequent film experience — it’s a jarring and grueling onslaught. This title sequence is in French, English, and Japanese with each typeface chosen with care to best suit the characters and the personalities of those on the team. LFO’s “Freak” with its crescendo rhythm helps provide the pace and vibe of the film to come. Euphoric, a visual and auditory onslaught.
“Enter the Void” Title Sequence | Gasper Noe
Gasper Noe is an Argentinian film director whose movies are some of the most disturbing stories told in the most confrontational of ways. Some of the subject matter purposefully is meant to assault the viewer with subject matter of violent sexual behavior or the disgusting primitive nature of society. His movies are commonly the type of movies that you later wish you un-saw. But in that disgust and controversy, there is valuable beauty in realism, commentary, and in his unique sense of story-telling.
The title sequence for Enter the Void, that he created with graphic designer Tom Kan matches these characteristics. It’s an onslaught of colors and typography in overdrive. It’s set to the electronic beat of “Freak,” by LFO. The music is equally dirty, visceral, and animalistic.
and how does the saying go? “Good artists copy, great artists steal..” well, Kanye West may have taken that quote a little too literally, but not surprising considering how great Kanye West thinks Kanye West is. Check out Kanye West’s music video, “All of the LIghts,” and see for yourself.
Watched Enter The Void again tonight, on Blu-Ray projection, in a makeshift home theatre. Thought-provoking movie for sure...I will always remember the title sequence above all in that film. Incredible clip.
