The voice interrupted the centaur. It was Mercury. The young man with brown hair and white wings had stopped smiling. He had moved a little away from the group, and his gaze swept across the courtyard, searching for something or someone.
—I haven’t seen Luke since we got here, —he said casually, but his wings—on his head and ankles—began to flutter slightly, as if moved by an internal wind—. Where is Luke?
The silence that followed was heavier than the one from the night before.
None of the demigods answered. Percy froze. Annabeth stopped writing. Clarisse, who was standing nearby, clenched her fists.
—Luke? —Rachel repeated, her voice barely a whisper, and Mercury looked her straight in the eyes.
—Yes. Luke. He’s my son —Mercury took a step forward, his tone still calm but with a slight crack of impatience—. Where is my son? I want to see him.
The wings on his ankles and back began to flutter a little faster, the contained excitement showing in his eyes. He was thrilled. He had traveled across the multiverse, and now he would have the chance to see his son in this new reality.
No one said a word.
