a/n: for my girls who don’t know how to navigate through life, have crippling anxiety, and have no father figure whatsoever. <3 (it’s been a bit guys! hope you enjoy~)
it was down-pouring like absolute hell outside, the sky was grey and the air smelt like petrichor and morning dew. on days like this, toji just wants to stay home and sleep the day away, or more so, be with his sweet girlfriend.
you were the complete opposite of him, the opposite of what most people think toji would really go for in a woman to begin with.
toji was bold. you were meek.
toji was confident, you were hesitant.
toji was fierce, you were timid.
and most importantly, toji was older, he had life experience and had gone through hell and back. you… were still quite young, and didn’t know how to navigate some things, coming from a lack of support and stability growing up, which caused you issues in the long run.
toji loves every part of you, the way you can barely hold eye contact, the way you blush so easily around him from his teasing and his powerful words, the way you’re so trusting, seeking him of all people for guidance and support. he wants to be a system for you that he never had the privilege to receive when he was younger, he wants to shelter you from the cruelty of the world and just keep you innocent forever.
“please don’t go, toji. not yet.” you whimpered softly with teary eyes as toji was sliding on a snug, compression t-shirt that hugged his powerful, muscular torso and arms. you knew his routine— he had to go out and earn some money from time to time, money to pamper his girl and make sure the bills get paid for. he refuses to let you work, knowing damn well he can provide and make cash to last for miles.
toji hates leaving you behind. yeah, you were in the safety of your shared home, you had everything you needed. sometimes he even had shiu check on you to make sure you weren’t ceasing to function while he was absent. he knows how you tend to get when you’re alone.
“i know, doll. fuck, i don’t wanna leave either, but you know how it is.” he murmurs softly with a frown as he finishes getting dressed, before immediately sitting on the edge of the bed you're sitting on with a sigh. “cmere, don’t be like that.”
toji pulls you into his warm embrace, one calloused hand cupping the back of your head to stroke it, while his other hand was snug around waist. “it gets so lonely when you leave, toji. i don’t like it at all.” you say as you look up at him, seeking his reassurance and love like you always have. he loves the way you rely on him. “i know it’s necessary, but…” your voice trailed off… you could then feel your lips quivering slightly.
“remember what i always tell you, doll? i’m always gonna come back, you hear me? my pretty girl will never be alone for too long.” toji intercepts as he slowly rocks you in his arms, before kissing your temple. “hush, you’re a big girl, yeah? need you to be strong for me, just these two days.”
you hate when toji leaves, it sends you into a state of anxiety and loneliness until that front door opens again. you can mostly function just fine without him, but it’s so much harder to when you feel so lost. he’s your grounding presence, the hand that leads you, and you’re so afraid to lose the love of your life when he risks his life to make money. you’ve tried to convince him to find a safer way to make income, but he always assures you that he’s got this.
but it’s always so worth it when he comes back.
toji comes back sore, irritated, and a bit exhausted, but the moment he spots you, so soft and sweet in his space, it’s all forgotten and dropped behind him. the way you tend to his bruises and shed tears because you missed him because you thought he might not come back— it’s a reminder of how important he is to you. he’s always felt the need to prove everyone wrong before he met you, but now… the only approval he needs is from you.
on nights where you hide in your shell and allow for your mind and emotions take control of you, toji holds you on his lap, and he will not let you go until he knows you’re in the right headspace.
“don’t you dare listen to that stupid shit your head is tellin' you. it’s all bullshit.” toji gruffly murmurs as he rubs your back, occasionally pressing a kiss to your lips as you cried softly in his embrace, babbling anxiously. “ain’t worth the fuss, not when i know you’re the most perfect girl there is. the only voice ya need to trust is mine, understand?”
it doesn’t matter what you have to say about yourself, whatever “flaw” and “insecurity” you express with protest against his words, toji knows you better than you know yourself, and he knows you’re perfect just the way you are, all you need is extra support, and that’s okay.
at times where you’re confused about a typical adult thing to do or stressed about a bill, tojis there. he guides you through it with ease and always tells you to not worry about it, to just let him take the load.
“you’re too precious to be worryin' about a damn rent bill. don’t you know toji's got ya?” he says with that smirk, “you just sit there all cute and let your man handle everything, my girl doesn’t need to be so raddled all the time with nonsense.”
tojis support is forever lasting, he stands tall for you and helps you through the anxieties within your daily life. he knows you’ve struggled as a child and still do, knows that you can’t help the fear and confusion you always tend to feel. the way you function is the result of the way people have failed around you and neglected you, he understands that. he’s lived that himself. he will guide you like a lost little lamb towards the safety of his word.
if it were up to him, he’d keep you in a bubble, he’d never allow you to worry or cry again because of adulthood, or because someone looked at you funny. he knows he can’t just shelter you, but damn it he will do the next thing closest to it if he can. life is unfair, and he hates that you have to inevitably encounter an example of that from time to time. but when you do, he will always be there, and if anybody dares to hurt you? expect them to either get a dangerous look from him, or disappear to never be found or seen again.
he will teach you how to be comfortable in your own skin. how to only trust his word and nobody else’s. how to navigate through the stressful moments and little fears to overcome them. he knows you’re resilient, you’re capable, you just need someone to hold your hand through it and call you a “good girl.”
every accomplishment to come, every goal checked off the list, every little milestone, is so important to toji, he shows his appreciation by spoiling you and pulling you bear hug/ that nearly crushes your poor lungs, but you love every moment of it. god, you love him so much. and most importantly, he reminds you that you’re doing great, and to just keep up the work.
and so, toji was sprawled out along the sofa, long legs stretched out in front of him as you were laid along his chest, one muscular arm branded around your waist, while the other rests behind his head. he notices the way you sneak peeks up at him with those pretty eyes, the way you shyly smile and nuzzle closer to him like a kitten. just too cute.
he chuckles softly, pretending to not notice for a moment longer, before eventually moving his hand towards your face, and gently squishing your cheeks together, causing you to squeak with surprise. “ah! toji—“
“you’re not sneaky enough, babygirl. gotta give ya some stealth pointers sometime.” he teases as he releases your cheeks before pulling you closer. “you don’t have to be shy around me, you know i love when you look at me like that.”
moments like this, playful and cozy is why toji is always so eager to return home from a mission, to wake up everyday. it’s a reminder of the precious life he is responsible for, a reminder that there truly is still innocence and love left in this world.
“focus on the movie, silly girl. you picked it out, remember?” toji scolds playfully as his hand pats your bottom and squeezes it with a playful warning, a little whine coming from you. “okay… okay, you meanie.” you say softly, a hint of a cheeky little smile gracing your lips as you rest your head against his firm chest, listening to his soothing heartbeat as you both fixated on the movie playing on the tv screen. though, deep down you both knew you’d both get distracted and eventually ditch the movie all together.
toji is your safe space, and you are toji’s sweet girl.
