A little bit about
皆さんこんにちは!I noticed a request from blogger @studytaken (great blog by the way! ) to talk about how to use という. Because I am still learning too, I didn’t know much about it. So I went and did some research. From what I have learned という has a few different ways of being used. I’ll do my best to explain using it as: “to say” , and as “is called” , and finally as “so that means”
In this case と works kind of like quotation marks and いう (most commonly written as 言う in this case) means “to say” .
Here’s the formula: “noun+は 「quote」と言う。
-> ane wa “nemui desu” to itta. -> My sister said “I’m sleepy”
-> Yamada san wa “detekure!” to iimashita. -> Mr./Ms. Yamada said “get out!”
という as “to be/ is called”
This is to be used when introducing information that you don’t think your conversation partner already knows.
“Have you seen the movie Passengers?”
->senshuu watashi wa za guddo pureesu to iu resutoran ni ikimashita -> Last week I went to restaurant called The Good Place
-> Watashi wa noeru to iimasu -> I am (called) Noelle.
-> asoko de puukii to iu inu ga imasu. -> There is a dog called Pookie over there.
ということは as “so that means...”
Another useful application of という(ことは) is when you want to understand or clarify what something means.
So if you want to clarify what someone said to you without repeating the information given :
A: 僕は時間がありませんでした。-> Boku wa jikan ga arimasen deshita. -> I didn’t have any time.
-> to iu koto wa, shukudai wo shimasen deshita to iu koto? -> So that means, you didn’t do your homework, right?
If you want to just explain what you mean, or repeat the information:
-> sanzen en dake ga aru so iu koto wa, ii kuruma wo kau wa dekimasen. ->I only have 3,000 yen so that means I cannot buy a good car.
I hope I have explained these points clearly, and as always please let me know if I’ve made any mistakes! Followers, if you know anything else about the proper usage of という please let me know! Lets all help each other out :)
