Giant water bug doing the head thing
Intro post :)
Hello hello! How we doin' everybody? My name is tsuyo osorenai! My quirk is "water bug" which gives me the physical traits and powers of water bugs!
Picture of me :)
Don't I just look like million bucks?
I may be short, but I'm not scared of anything or anyone! I never back down from a challenge...or a fight! If ya wanna go mano y mano, I'm ready to rumble anywhere, anytime!
I'm still a little clumsy at flying tho-but good thing I got my bff nejire hado helping me learn!
Mod: alrighty, just a quick disclaimer that tsuyo is a minor and he's aro/ace so no sexual comments, and no flirting either.
Adult Toe-Biter
My toe-biter is now an adult! At first when I saw the molt floating on the top of the water I was a given a shock as I thought he was dead! I took a small reed in the tank and moved the molt around then realized there was another, larger toe-biter in the tank hiding in the reeds. It was then I realized, he had molted into a full-winged adult! Yes, toe-biters can FLY. At this point my professor said that now the insect's main goal was not to feed but rather, to mate. He is beautiful in color and is a lot longer than when he was just an immature. I have successfully reared an aquatic insect!
(Btw some of these pictures were taken a few days later. I did not want to touch him when his body was still soft and fresh from molting)

Flipping the Food Chain
At the pond, one student, N, had caught a couple minnows! Creekchubs! After I placed the three minnows in the tank, we watched as my toe-biter quickly caught one of the smaller minnows and began siphoning in its digestive juices and sucking them back up in a liquid meal.
This is one of the few cases where the food chain is flipped where the insect will eat the fish.
The only surviving fish was the larger creekchub that the toe-biter had attempted to catch a couple times. Eventually they just became tank mates until the end of the term.
Update on Mr. Toe-Biter
N and I had dropped by the marsh about a mile away and had picked up quite a few tadpoles, whirlygigs, backswimmers, and other fun water critters. Just about two days later I was confused as to how the tank was so...empty? Apparently Mr. Toe-Biter appears to have a voracious appetite and within two days he had devoured every swimming creature which was evident by the sunken, white bodies at the bottom of the tank. He is one of the few insects that flips the food chain by preying on both amphibians and fish. He doesn't exactly stalk his prey, but his feeding mechanism involves hanging around the top of the water with his snorkel-like breathing apparatus at the end of his abdomen while waiting for prey to come just close enough for him to lay his attack. With tadpoles, he is extremely quick as I am almost unable to see his movement but can only see the results after the fact with the tadpole locked in his grip with his moth siphoning in digestive enzymes and sucking them back up as a tasty, liquid meal.
Can you see the toe-biter?
I kept him in a tank and he's still kicking. I may need to toss in some tadpoles (they are plentiful) from the marsh I caught him in.
