@tolkienofcolourweek day six | ordinary people | ioreth
Then an old wife, Ioreth, the eldest of the women who served in that house, looking on the fair face of Faramir, wept, for all the people loved him. And she said: âAlas! if he should die. Would that there were kings in Gondor, as there were once upon a time, they say! For it is said in old lore: The hands of the king are the hands of a healer. And so the rightful king could ever be known.â
âThe Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, âThe Houses of Healingâ
Day 1 @tolkienofcolourweek
"âAnd who are you, and what have you to do with Minas Tirith?â asked Boromir, looking in wonder at the lean face of the Ranger and his weather-stained cloak. âHe is Aragorn son of Arathorn,â said Elrond âand he is descended through many fathers from Isildur Elendilâs son of Minas Ithil. He is the Chief of the DĂșnedain in the North, and few are now left of that folk.â" - J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring, "The Council of Elrond"
@tolkienofcolourweek day 2: ancestry, heritage, passing on traditions âą ARAGORN'S LINE
[ID: an edit comprised of six posters in various shades of brown and tan, with some pale blue or grey accents.
1: A small oval image at the top left shows Cherokee Jack, an aniyunwiya man with long, straight black hair and brown skin. He is shown in profile, looking off to the right and wearing several layers of clothing. Large outlined text below the image reads "Elros" and underneath in a serif and cursive font, "First king of NĂșmenor." Below that is a block quote in much smaller text reading "At the feet of the mountain were built the tombs of the Kings, and hard by upon a hill was Armenelos, fairest of cities, and there stood the tower and the citadel that was raised by Elros son of EĂ€rendil, whom the Valar appointed to be the first king of the DĂșnedain." The part of the block is a lighter color, and italicized. At the bottom of the image, serif text reads "Tar-Minyatur" in all caps, and around the side of the oval text reads "star-foam." Large dark brown text along the right side of the poster reads "founder" in all caps / 2: A building with many towers and domes. Brown and cream-colored outlined text in the center reads "kings" repeated over and over / 3: Same format as Image 2, but the image shows a rocky ocean shore. Text reads "heroes" / 4: Same format as Image 1, but the orientation is reversed. The oval shows Ekow Otoo, a ghanaian-british model with brown skin and long dark hair in twists. He looks toward the viewer with a serious, calm expression. Text below the image reads "Elendil" and "Leader of the Faithful." Curving text along the side reads "star lover." The text block reads "Amandil and Elendil were great ship-captains; and they were of the line of Elros Tar-Minyatur, though not of the ruling house to which belonged the crown and the throne in the city of Armenelos.â The first two phrases are emphasized. Bottom and side text read "NimruzĂźr" and "voyager" both in all caps / 5: Same format as Image 1. The oval shows Najib Abdi, a somalian model with brown skin and curly brown hair. He looks towards the viewer with a serious, neutral expression. Text below the image reads "Aragorn" and "King of the Westlands." Curved text reads "revered king." Text block reads "Tall as the sea-kings of old, he stood above all that were near; ancient of days he seemed and yet in the flower of manhood; and wisdom sat upon his brow, and strength and healing were in his hands, and a light was about him." The final phrase is emphasized. Bottom and side text reads "Elessar" and "renewer" in all caps / 6: Same format as Images 2 and 3. The background shows a carved stone dome seen over other stone walls. Text reads "builders anew" /End ID]

A Chant from Rhun
For @tolkienofcolourweek
Greetings, old friend!
Here comes the darkness again.
I name you friend, darkness;
show your kinder face to us, I pray you.
Veil our tracks to others,
but do not conceal our enemies!
Cool our heated brows,
but do not freeze our marrow!
Let us rest tonight in peace
under the black folds of your cloak.
Valinor Silmarillion

In the Years of the Trees, the TambĂș was a symbolic war dance with stick fighting performed to the beat of the drum. After the flight across the HelcaraxĂ«, words replaced the use of weapons, for there were no trees on the icy landscape. The winner was no longer determined by broken sticks but by the better performance. Nobody was safe from the clever wordplay of a TambĂș singer aiming for the audience's favor. Personal defects and societal criticisms became favourable topics. Soon it became the predominant way to publicly contest the heads of households, work commanders, and governing classes.
