There is a mess of walkers around them; he could have gotten bit YET there he stands perfectly fine — or, so she assumed. Finally she meets eye contact, her expression rather b l a n k.

He's hearing what she's saying and he was sure if he'd been anyone else, he would've thanked her -- but she was putting herself in danger for someone she didn't need to be helping. Unlike most, he couldn't get bit, couldn't become infected -- he couldn't turn. Explaining this would only confuse her, she wouldn't believe him, they never did. Maybe he's coming off as a hardass, but he's only trying to keep her s a f e.
