Rereading this beta report I got for TM:TW and the reader said Ada started out insecure and doesn't grow substantially throughout the book. The latter I can see (working on that) but I was going for someone who doesn't like change and resists it as much as she can. She's the type who's shy around new people, not in an insecure way but in a "meeting new people is exhausting and I dont like it" way. Not mean, but you know. She's distant because she's not naturally trusting.
Ofc, this is just the beta's opinion and isn't the word of god, but that was my intention with Ada. I could get another beta reader when I have money and see what they say about Ada.
they also said there was a lack of real distinction between the characters, but I'm not sure which ones. Joon's character i can see needing work, but Ben's notably chill, Ada's distant by nature, and Ginger has her personality set (academically smart, impulsive, airheaded sometimes).
wait i should make maggie white again
Just two chapters left to convert. These things are so long like omg.

im gonna rebuild the soundtrack for The Mantel. These are teenagers so I want more energetic and age-relevant songs on there. Hozier still fuels portions of it, but I was throwing a bunch of his music on there without really understanding that 99% of his music is about love. Ada's discomfort with Mags will fit well with his songs about colonization I think
also I wish you could have subsections for a playlist, so a group for the kids and a section for the Witch and also a section for [redacted]
oooh maybe ada's dad should get a job for the school
ginger being the less cautious and more adventurous one is a good pairing to ada's reserved and Think it Through nature. I want to boost Ada's critical thinking skills a little more though. That and when it comes down to it, Ginger's better at thinking on her feet and better able to accept change than Ada.
even how they frame their possessions is different. Ada feels like she's been invaded, yes, but also she feels like her house is being invaded and it's the lack of stability going on in her life right now. She's had to change schools to be in an environment where she KNOWS getting accepted will be difficult because she's a middle class Black girl at an elite PWI (like millionaires elite). so she's had that life shift of leaving her racially diverse school. Ginger was always going there and she found friends, though, so the possession doesn't extend to her house for her.
ginger i think is also a more positive person generally than ada. they're both glad to be alive but ginger was in a worse way.
