I've seen many people talk about the horror and tragedy Michael Shelley suffered, the way he was betrayed and unmade.

But. What about The Spiral itself? I know it's a horrific entity that was trying to twist the world into complete madness. But it was also being born, in a way. Can you imagine the sheer wrongness of finally coming into your own self and realising that there is Something Wrong that someone else drove into you? Like an extra, erroneous cog in the machine of your very insides and identity. And that cog, that shard of an intruding body shatters your entire self, absorbing and reducing you to a shadow of what you were meant to be. A shard that, by the way, is the very opposite of your own nature. Because Michael Shelley kept on trusting and believing, never doubting Gertrude for a second, but the Distortion is the one who lies.
