when nez released the america gene, we were still talking somewhat regularly, and he asked me what i thought of it. my initial response was “it was pretty good,” and he said “PRETTY good??” and asked me to explain. i told him that i thought the writing in his first book (tlshonz) was a bit better and more focused. i also told him that while i thought tlshonz was a bit indulgent with the (sort of) self-insertion, i thought that the characters in tag were not as likable or engaging. i did make sure to reiterate that i liked both books, but that the second one didn’t speak to me quite as much. he seemed so grateful and surprised that i told him the truth; almost touched. he explained that so many people around him are so quick to adore everything he does, no matter what, and how it was kind of refreshing for him to hear an honest opinion of his work
i recently sent a request to join this new “discussion group” that has been set up, in the hopes that perhaps i can comment on some of these frankly unbelievable posts that are being made on his behalf. (i’d at least like a chance to comment on a livestream, and see if he even acknowledges my presence.) the rigid explanations on how to properly digest his work strike me as particularly bizarre and uninviting. the nature of any creative project is that it is prone to various personal interpretations. sure, the creator always has their own intentions and meanings behind things, and it’s fine to discuss those. however, once it’s put out there, it is open to other people’s interpretations. that’s the beauty of being an artist. there was a time when nez appreciated that concept. now, i’m not so sure. i can only imagine what he thinks of these diatribes being written on how to “correctly” read and listen to his work. yeesh. we’ll see what happens, i guess.
