In a better world Prime Minister Koo would have been the Female Lead of a drama with largely the same plot but that villified all aspects of Monarchy rather than glorify it when "the right king" is doing it, depicting her underdog struggles in a classist, sexist world, and her Love Interest would have been Luna.
And I realize just now this os the perfect plot for a Otome Isekai Villsiness story.
It ends with the fall of the monarchy of course.
The King: Eternal Monarch is a great series plot wise with great characters and dynamics (Someone give an award to the actor that plays the Undestructible Sword(s) for not only playing 2 vastly different characters but also playing each character PRETENDING to be the other character) but is also such blatant propaganda I can't stay silent about it.
1) First layer, the most obvious, is the Monarchist Propaganda. The Kingdom of Korea is united, never suffered the 1950s war, never sufferes Japanese Invasion, is strong military and economically, the 4th nation in the world PIL wise. Place is a Utopia, and Trump isn't president in America, so much lots of people in our world are willing to kill their Dopplegangers to switch over there. The King wields absolute autority, and kills and kidnaps "traitors" with Impunity.
1.5) Some misoginistic and anti democratic themes, intertwined: The democratically elected Prime Minister is CONSTANTLY villainized by the Narrative, the characters, and the world at large, for being 1) Elle Woods, 2) The daughter of a lowly fishmonger, 3) trying to raise above her station. She's constantly called scheming and a harpy, despite being a SPLENDID prime minister fighting day and night against asshole members of her cabinet to cut down corruption and keep the Welfare State fucking alive, but she's a hot woman in her late 30s trying to catch the male lead, a king who despises her and her work as he wastes away riding his horse or visiting another world as she does all the work, and then goes "history will remember me while you'll be a footnote" just to twist the knife, so of course she's evil and a traitor.
2) United Koreas Propaganda. Several times it's mentioned how in the Kingdom of Korea you can go fron Seul to the "Northern Region" by train, and how this is a key factor in the kingdom prosperity.
3) Military Propaganda. In the kingdom of Korea, the draft is voluntary, and the military is strong. There is an entire episode devoted to Japan, a weak and cowardly state suffering heavy financial troubles, trying to declare war and getting humiliated by the King, comanding the armies on the frontlines, using the fleet to drive them back. Also weapon and military p0rn.
4) Copaganda. The female lead is a cop, both she and her colegues deploy extreme force and underhanded tactics on suspects, and complaints on police brutality are handwaved. The Kingdom of Korea has an entire scene about the Kimg using every camera in the city to track down one person, and there is a heavy surveilance state motif going on.
SIN JAE DESERVES BETTER !!!!! SIN JAE !!!! yaβll testing me now
