Touken Ranbu Headcanon (old)
t/w: saniwa death, aggressive behavior, attachment issues
summary: long headcanon about the citadel's structure and how some of the sword bois react to their saniwa being sacrificed to keep the citadel alive.
a/n: just some random thoughts about the sword bois. I don't really view any of them in a romantic light so the hcs are mostly vague and up to interpretation. I couldn't add everyone because I haven't read all of the dialogue in game, so the characters included are the ones I'm "somewhat" familiar with/have kiwamed, I also wrote this when the EN server shutdown, and never had the time to edit nor post it. And NONE IF THIS IS REAL BTW JUST A HC. Sorry for any mischaracterisations or grammar issues;; If you have any headcanons you can add to this, pls tell me!!!!
*Imagine the citadel baring some of its attributes from the house from Howl's moving castle. It doesn't walk or move,Ā doesn't have a talking magical fire (you have konnosuke for that lol), but it does have a door that could transport you through various timelines and centuries,Ā there's also a switch that helps transform it into the various cycles of seasons and scenery we see in game. It creates a disturbance in the citadel but it ultimately changes the entire layout and time of day within the citadel. There's also a requirement in order to enter, you either have to be connected to the saniwa, or be one of the toukens. The swords can be summoned into a specific locations for sorties via machine, or be forcefully summoned/pulled out by the saniwa in case of emergency. Doing sorties can also put a strain on the saniwa's health, so when doing surveys they can just leave through the door, leaving through the door however, leads them to the date and time where it should begin but not the actual spot where the survey starts. All of this knowledge is passed on from your first sword towards the next swords to be summoned, so you don't have to worry about orientating every new sword that appears.
*And for a massive expansion, I picture the saniwa doing the same thing Howl does when helping the castle move.
Magic circle, a ritual the toukens are barely able to wrap their head around (even from the most mystical ones, despite having a vague idea of the process, are still amazed by the sudden transformation). Everyone has to stop what they're doing and stay inside the citadel and try not to panic as the saniwa reforms both the inside and outside of the citadel.
*AND YES YES IK THE ANIME ALRDY SHOWED THAT THEY ALL JUST MOVED SOMEWHERE BUT HEAR ME OUT
*The citadel's central core is the saniwa. Their body serves as a the main source of life power for each sword. Their power to create and bestow life on the swords comes directly from their lifeforceā all saniwas have a lifeforce that allows them live for extremely longā almost lending them immortality if it isnāt tampered or drained out of them.
*And that power is strong enough to sustain the forcefield that surrounds the area that they live in, it protects them all from harm or from the retrogade army from sensing their presence/location.
*each sword that appears in the citadel takes a bit of life force from the saniwaās body, the more swords that appear in the citadel, the weaker the saniwa's body becomes.
*overtime the saniwaās body gets steadily drained from said life force. Hence why thereās a limit as to how many swords they can have in the citadel.
*as the final sword gets forged, another succesor will take the saniwaās place. Someone stronger, but more or less suffers the same fate as time goes on.
*in the process of the saniwa getting replaced, their body is then used as a form of enhancement to further improve and solidify the citadel. Just like the "strengthen", in the game, where duplicate swords are used to improve the original swords stats, it's like that, except instead of the first saniwa being improved, they're body is then sacrificed as a means of power for the citadel (and in extension, the swords') overall improvement. The toukens get stronger, the citadel becomes more formidable.
How the sword bois react to this information:
*I imagine these specific swords who have undergone a massive attachment (or change) in their kiwame forms may be the most against the whole process, mainly kiwames: Kashuu, Hasebe, Fudou, Yasusada
Considering how they've lost important people or have been discarded in the past, and the journey that helped them come to terms with it all suddenly goes for naught because the master they wanted to serve and protect is going to be killed-- sacrificed. It's even worse that they know what will happen to you and yet they still aren't able to do anything to stop it. It almost feels like they've been betrayed, because what was all this for? It wouldn't be wise to ask them to help escort you or help you in the process. They'd adamantly refuse, beg you to not go, they'd pry, try to bargain with you, ask if there's anything that they can do to prevent it, that there must be some other way, another way where they won't have to lose another important person in their life.
Could possibly get aggressive, it's best to have another sword (or several) with you when relaying the info to them, and keep them as far away as possible from the sortie machine.
*They're resigned, almost defeated, not because they're apathetic to the situation, but because they don't know how to feel about it. They understand that this isn't easy for you either, and they know enough not to press on the matter too much. Would assist you with anything that doesn't involve them having to have a hand at, or have to see you die. They don't want to see it, nor do they want to let it happen either, they'd ask if there's another way around it, ask if you really wanted to go through with it
"Do you want to run-away? It's definitely a choice" (it isn't, well at least for you), they'll respect your decision eitherway and act accordingly, only because they don't know any other way to cope with the news: Yamanbagiri Kunihiro, Nagasone, Mutsunokami, Tsurumaru, Shizukagata
*They understand the price of war. The families that wait endlessly for their loved ones to come back, the so called heroes that never got to reap their rewards or see if their sacrifice was worth the pain of leaving behind everyone they've ever loved.
But you're not supposed to be a hero, you're their master, the head of the citadel.
They've lived lifetimes ahead of you, they can live without you eventually, but despite this... not having you in the citadel, not seeing you at your usual spot by the balcony every evenings, not being able to receive an omamori from you every time they go to a sortie, knowing your fate and not being able to do anything but bide the time until they find someone else to sit by the balcony and give out their omamori.
It's not a wound that heals easily, but itās not immobilising either, itās a different type of ache, a longing that feels so familiar yet so far away.
They don't know who sold their homeland, but they know who paid the price.
And as unfortunate as it is, you are yet just another spoil of war. They wouldn't say they didn't see it coming, there was always aĀ sizeable distance between you and everyone else, noticing it was an unsaid taboo, a topic not breached by any. There are many things you couldn't say or tell them. There are many things you had to hide, the news of your future passing only solidified this fact even further, you were carrying a burden they know you wouldn't let anyone else shoulder. They respect your choice regarding the matter without hesitation: Souza, Onimaru, Yagen, Oodenta, Ookurikara, Juzumaru, Akashi Kuniyuki, Sayo
*Absolutely heartbroken, they're crying halfway through your explanation. Isn't there any other way? This is too cruel, you're not actually going through with it are you? They'll be good-- better, they won't ask for anything anymore, just please stay, please don't leave, please please please-- complete opposite to the first one in that they are compliant (but still deeply saddened) about the news, will eventually relent in the end. The least they can do before their time with you runs out is to spend as much of it by your side. In the end, your choice on the matter will be above all. But that doesn't stop them from crying, hoping, praying, wishing all of this wasn't true, that maybe it was all just a suprise, a terrible, cruel prank set to scare them. That one day, they won't have to fear waking up and not seeing you in your room-- instead you're alive, happy, smiling. Not being able to see that again... It scares them so much. They refuse to leave your side: Akita, Midare, Houchou, Gokotai, Kashuu (non-kiwame), Shinano, Hakata, (most of the tantous I think)
*Trying to keep up a strong face while their heart is breaking. They're trying their hardest not to cry in front of you and with the others, but spend some time with them after the news and they'll burst. It's unfair, they barely had any time to spend with you, and then they won't get to see you anymore?: Shioshio, Kasen, Horikawa, Kanesada, Aizen, Doudanuki, Yasusada (non-kiwame), Namazuo, Fudou (pre-kiwame), Jiroutachi
*Accepting of the outcome, the most empathetic of your situation. They're scared for you, for the others, and what will happen to the citadel after what's to come. Will help you with anything you need, even if it means restricting those who oppose your decision: Nikkari Aoi, Yamabushi, Taroutachi, Kogitsunemaru, Shokudaikiri, Ichigo Hitofuri, Hachisuka, Sohayanotsurugi, Koryuu
