Merry Christmas to all! No matter what you celebrate this holiday season, I hope that you are having a wonderful time with people you love and who love you.
New paper day is the best day!
This is two different orders of paper that happened to come on the same day. It appears to be a universal truth about packages and books on hold: they all arrive at once.
The first package was some kami for general, everyday use. I decided to try a new brand of paper, because I wanted some more double-sided papers to play around with, and this Jong Ie Nara combo pack seemed to be a good test case. The thing I was most worried about was whether it was going to be perfectly square, because I have absolutely no patience for imperfect squares on paper that is billed specifically as origami paper. I am happy to report that these are perfect squares! I can now breathe easier. I also really like the variety in this pack: you have the standard rainbow of single-sided papers as well as a standard rainbow of double-sided with really nice complementary colors on the reverse. Plus, there are 8 each of the patterned double-sided sheets, which means there are just enough for me to cut down into smaller squares and make 30-unit kusudamas! I’m very happy with where I can go with this paper.
And then, there’s the special paper. The same friend who asked me to teach origami at her school this past spring asked me to make some origami handouts for their winter fair. I decided I would make snowflakes, so I chose to make them out of tissue foil. Honestly, it looks a little more like glassine in this photo, but that’s part of why I chose that paper: it’s very thin, like glassine, but it also has a subtle shimmer that is very reminiscent of real snow. I’m really pleased with how they’re turning out so far.
The other tissue foil was my “If I’m going to purchase special paper and pay for shipping for someone else, then I’m definitely going to treat myself to some too!” order. (I’m not a very pithy namer.) So I now have 20 sheets of tissue foil in 30 cm squares. Christmas gifts, here I come!
