Your makeup took you forever with all all the different colour corrections you had to put on the left side of your face to hide the bruise and the cut.

You were up and gone before most of the team were up, as you walked through the tower and onto the Manhattan streets. It was a warm day already, the sun beating down on the civilians of New York as you decided to walk to the firm. When you arrived you went straight to the floor that had Harvey’s office to see if his cases needed anything urgently. However, when you were in the elevator you popped a few more pills into your mouth, hoping to fend off the pain long enough so you could concentrate and get your work done.

Either way, when you got to Paulina’s desk just outside Harvey’s office, you were instantly squished in a tight hug.

“Geez you’d think I’d been gone for months between you and Tony!” You exclaimed as you pulled away from the woman.

Paulina laughed. “How is it going by the way at the tower?”

“Trouble in paradise hon.” You sighed and absently rubbed at your forehead tiredly despite the morning hour.

She patted your arm consolingly. “Girls night tonight then, we’ll put it on Harvey’s corporate card.” She winked mischievously.

“I’ll meet you here at 8!” You called over your shoulder as you finally slipped into your boss’s office.

The man looked up at you from behind his desk and immediately stood up, pulled you to him before forcing you to sit in his chair. The force made the chair spin.

“God Harvey! Calm down! What are you doing?” You exclaimed as he yanked the chair so it was facing him.

His hand went straight to your hair moving it behind your shoulders and he tilted your head gently, contrasting his previous violent movements.

“What happened? Who did this to you?!” Harvey’s voice echoed around the spacious office. He grabbed a hand wipe from who knows where and began dabbing at your face over where the bruising was.

Blanching, you realised you must have smudged it when you were talking with Paulina. “It’s nothing don’t worry about-”

“God damn it Y/N! It covers almost half your face! And there’s a cut!” Harvey continued to removed the makeup that had taken so long to put on. “Fucking hell…”

He took a step back and stared as you looked down into your lap.

“Harvey…”

“PAULINA! GET IN HERE WITH THE FIRST AID KIT!”

The secretary came running in with the green box and gasped as she laid eyes on you. “Bloody hell… what the hell happened Y/N?”

You groaned. “It’s nothing just forget about it!”

“Nothing?! Paulina hand me that box now?!”

“Harvey-”

The lawyer snapped at you. “Shut the hell up and be a good patient.”

You quickly shut your mouth. Harvey never told you to shut up. The raw anger that could be seen in his eyes was terrifying as he applied a gel to your skin with a feather like touch. He then pulled out Steri-strips like you had and carefully covered up the small cut which had begun to weep again throughout the whole ordeal. Packing away the kit, Harvey didn’t say a word but it didn’t take a genius to work out that he was pissed beyond all of hell.

“Who did this?” Paulina asked, still staring at you face.

“Doesn’t matter.” You mumbled.

Harvey stood straight up and shoved the first aid kit roughly into Paulina’s hands. “You tell me right now who did this.” His voice was low and menacing.

“Harvey-”

“WHO DID IT Y/N?!”

“Steve.” You muttered under your breath.

“Excuse me?”

“Steve Rogers hit me after I was helping him practice a fake deposition after I told him to ‘grow the fuck up’ as he was saying he and the team didn’t need my help.” You tried to speak normally but whatever gel Harvey had put on your face was making it feel weird.

Problematically, whilst you had been having your internal reverie, Harvey had stalked out the office with a predatory posture.

You quickly ran after him, making sure your hair covered your injury. “Harvey! Harvey wait!” People were spectating as you ran through the open plan space trying to keep up with the man on a warpath. “Harvey!”

You tumbled into the elevator with him and tried to dissuade him from whatever he was planning but with no avail.

Chasing him through the Manhattan streets, covering the five block distance to the tower, you called  “HARVEY STOP!” You pleaded. “Come on; it’s nothing! Don’t worry about it!”

“He hit you, Y/N!”

You groaned and unfortunately as you neared the elevator FRIDAY recognised you and automatically controlled elevator once you were into. “Harvey-“

“You’re not going to change my mind.”

“Won’t stop me from trying.” You snorted. “Just let it go; it’s fine!”

The door pinged open and to your slight horror all the avengers were lounging around and Harvey made a bee-line towards them.

“Harvey!”

Bucky’s POV (surprise!)

I heard the elevator ping open followed by a now familiar voice shouting.

“Harvey!” Y/N shouted. “Harvey for fuck’s sake just let it go!” Clapping heels and oxfords snapping against the hard floor became louder as did the shouts.

The team, also now hearing the commotion turned to the noise as a very well dressed man came in. Expensive suit, Italian leather shoes, Rolex watch, iPhone X visible in his suit pants pocket; this shows high-paying job in which he often spoke to people he needed to impress. First name terms with Y/N, older than her - possible boss? No, too close a relationship however due to Y/N’s associate status, most likely the partner who hired her and therefore Senior Partner and direct ‘superior’. 

All of this flew through my head in seconds before I quietly angled my body for an attack. It wouldn’t take a genius to figure out why he was here.

“HARVEY, YOU DICKHEAD, JUST CALM DOWN AND LEAVE IT ALONE!” Y/N came running around the corner close behind ‘Harvey’, pulling on his forearm trying to get him to stop. To her credit, it did work and Harvey stopped moving to stand still, his eyes narrowed and searching. 

Annoyingly for her no doubt, the sudden halt caused her hair to shoot behind her and her face was exposed. The team made various signs of shock at the sight. We finally saw the damage Steve had done the night before causing even Natasha and I to share a look.

Black, blue, purple bruising with yellow tinges around the edges cover the top left half of her face with a small cut on her eyebrow. Avoiding the eye meaning she had been able to use makeup to hide it. Full healing time: approximately 18 days.

“Oh my god…” Wanda let out an unsteady breath.

“Jesus.” Sam muttered as he looked away, guilt flashing through his features.

Y/N rolled her eyes. “Relax I’m high as a kite. More importantly, where is Captain Rogers?” 

I saw Harvey tense up and sneer at the very mention of his name: interesting. “Talking to Fury.” I avoided the location.

She rolled her eyes despite the situation.

“What are we-”

Oh fuck it.

Steve walked into the room as if nothing was wrong but he quickly froze upon the sight of Y/N and Harvey. He took in Y/N’s face and even he looked startled by the fatality of his hit.

Y/N pleaded with her partner. “Harvey no! HARVEY! Don’t hurt him please; he didn’t do it on purpose!”

Well, that was lies. Everyone in the room at the time knew that it was fully intentional.

Harvey overpowered the other lawyer and began to stalk towards him.

“How dare you ass-”

He was cut off as Y/N had launched herself onto his back, arms around his neck and legs trapping his arms to his body, effectively neutralising any threat he may have posed to Steve. In my peripheral vision, I saw Natasha raise an eyebrow at her unique methods and quick thinking.

“If we could calm down, that would be great.” Y/N’s sarcasm reached everyone in the room. 

She showed off her core strength by unwinding her arms and leaning back which caused Harvey to moved backwards to compensate for the change in the weight distribution. When she appeared to be happy with the distance between the two seeming mule-headed men, she removed herself from Harvey’s back.

“Now, before you two have a battle of wits,” She heavily stressed the last word. “You’re both going to sit down at this table on opposite sides and chill the fuck out.” - Both men shot her glares - “Today would be nice.”

Begrudgingly the men did so and Sam couldn’t retain his amusement at the men, who were either six foot or above, being ordered around by the shorter woman. 

“Okay, now we’re sat down and not about to kill each other, we can now talk.” Sam was ‘coughing’ into his hand and the patronising tone Y/n had adopted. “We all know that Captain Rogers hit me-”

“More like abused.” Harvey muttered but went ignored.

“And that resulted in the bruising that is currently on my face. It is also known that I am still officially his lawyer and he does indeed need legal representation. However, it was stated by myself last night that the captain can ‘fucking represent himself’, I think were my exact words, in his trial. In hindsight, my words were harsh but I feel like they were justified considering the events in which they were said. Despite this, I will continue to represent Captain Rogers.”

Harvey and all of the team looked to her in shock. Natasha, on the other hand, looked proud of the girl’s decision meaning something must have happened last night.

“Whatever anybody is thinking on the situation, it doesn’t matter. The Avengers’ arraignment is in one week. I’m going to say on a definite note that the plea will be ’not guilty’? Great.” Y/N plowed on. “I expect that everyone won’t do anything stupid in between now and then. Yes, I’m looking at you Tony. T’Challa, are you going to be able to be there?”

T’Challa was silent for a moment. “I believe so.”

“Can’t he just use his own Wakandan lawyers?” Rhodes asked bitterly.

 Harvey answered him. “He could but he wouldn’t need to due to his majesty’s status. King T’Challa has diplomatic immunity which means in this case, he’s above the law for this incident.”

“Harvey’s right but since T’Challa, or rather Black Panther, is now associated with the Avengers, it’s better to be safe than sorry and request his presence in case it is needed.”

“He has a title for a reason.” Steve muttered and I sent him a harsh glare.

Y/N also sent him a threatening look. “Indeed he does Captain Rogers however the pair of us have spoken and he has deemed it more acceptable for me to refer to his by his forename because, and I quote, I am doing him and his friends a ‘monumentus deed’.”

Steve looked from the woman and made eye contact with me. I averted my gaze; I needed to figure out what was going on with him.

Your body stretched itself out before your feet came into contact with cold leather causing you to jolt up panicked. a cool breeze enveloped the top of your body and you realised a suit jacket was now crinkled around your waist. Squinting slightly, you looked around to see that you had apparently fallen asleep last night whilst doing the paperwork with Harvey.

“You definitely don’t rock the morning after look.” The smug jerk walked into the office with a bag and two Starbucks cups.

“Shut up its way too early for your snarky personality.” You groaned and massaged your head.

Harvey chuckled and passed you one of the cups and the bag. “I got your favourite and Paulina went to your place and got clothes and an ‘emergency kit’ whatever that means.” 

“God I love you sometimes.” You quickly snatched the beverage from him and took a languid sip. “And the emergency kit is so I don’t appear to be the walking dead.” 

He hummed in understanding and quickly shooed you out the office. 

Once you had changed, reapplied your makeup and all the other things you had to do every morning, you walked back out to face the new day which meant returning to Harvey’s office. He looked up and almost gawked at your appearance.

“Well you look good.” He flirted shamelessly.

“It takes talent to look this good, and might I say you do as well?”

“Of course you may.” 

You rolled your eyes fondly. “I’m going to be out of the office the whole day so call me if you need me.” 

You grabbed your things and left as Harvey hummed his accession.

The taxi pulled up outside the Avengers’ Tower and you quickly walked through security flashing your badge that Tony had given you before proceeding to go to the private elevator that led to the private section of the tower and greeting FRIDAY.

“Good Morning Miss L/N, should I inform the Avengers that your are here?”

“Yes please, FRIDAY, and may you also ask them to join me in the meeting room?”

“Of Course, Miss.”

“Thank you FRIDAY.”

“Not a problem.”

True to her word, FRIDAY had told the team to meet you there as when you walked into the room, they were sat ready around the table waiting patiently. Or most of them were anyway.

“Finally! It’s been so long since we’ve seen you!”

You gave the person an unimpressed look. “Tony you came to my office yesterday, I wouldn’t act so heartbroken.”

“We missed you.” Scott gave you a rogue grin.

“I missed you too.” You sarcastically replied before clearing your throat. “Moving on from the sentimentality, you all are going to have to sit in a deposition. This is similar to an interrogation. The prosecuting lawyer, which in this case is Emory Myers, will be sitting with a camera that will be filming whilst asking you questions. You will be sat on the other side of the table with me answering the questions. I am only there to deflect question which are either not allowed in the eyes of the law, or otherwise unanswerable. Everybody with me so far?”

Sounds of acknowledgement met your question.

“Will it only be on of us at a time?” Wanda asked you.

“Yes it will be.” Nodding, you continued. “I’m here today to prepare you for this.”

Hours passed, in fact you ended up spending the whole day there with only an hour break at lunch which you ended up working on one of your other merger cases which thankfully would now be long gone within a week.

It was now late, around nine pm as you were now finally helping Steve as the last client left. Everybody was tired, Coffee mugs were scattered across the table as the team were gladly watching the final practice.

“First off, before we begin, I would like to ask whether you believe that there is trust and loyalty within a friendship?”

“Of course there is because without it there is no relationship between the people.”

“Thank you, Captain Rogers. How would you describe your relationship with Tony Stark, or the Avenger known as Iron Man?” You asked taking a well deserved sip of the coffee in your hands.

“Stark is a friend of mine, we’ve been working together on the team for years. We’ve had our conflicts yes, but so do many people.” He replied evenly his posture leaning back in his chair whilst resting his hands on the table.

“A conflict such as what most of the world is calling your ‘civil war’?”

“That would be an extreme example but yes.”

“And what you say caused this rift in the team?”

“We had a disagreement over whether the Avengers should sign the Sokovia Accords or not.”

“Indeed it would be an obvious answer to a weighted question. Captain Rogers, would you say that there were any other reasons for the conflict?”

“Nothing of great significance however I want to know what you are aiming for by asking me that.” Steve sat up that resting his full weight on the table.

“I think I’ll be the one asking questions here. What is your relationship with James Barnes, more commonly know as The Winter Soldier?” You straightened yourself up in your chair.

“Buck and I go way back to before the war as we were childhood best friends, practically brothers.”

“So it is almost mind-numbingly obvious to say that there is a strong bond between you and you are loyal to him.”

“Definitely.”

You opened a file and took out a document and passed it to him.

“Let it be on record that the defendant had just been passed an  affidavit signed by Natasha Romanoff stating that Steve Rogers knew that The Winter Soldier was responsible for Howard and Maria Stark’s deaths imminently after the Potomac Disaster.” You slid another sheet to him. “Let is also be known that a second affidavit has been passed to the defendant signed by Tony Stark that Captain Rogers admitted to knowing about the cause of Howard and Maria Stark’s deaths and did not tell Tony Stark. Previously you stated that you were friends with Stark yet here is evidence from two sources saying you withheld critical information from him that has affected his life massively. Did your relationship with Sergeant Barnes have any impact as to the causes of your recent conflict?”

Steve tensed up in his chair removing his weight from the table. “Sergeant Barnes is a good man and had no control over his actions during his time with HYDRA as The Winter Soldier. Thaddeus Ross wanted Bucky for a crime he did not commit and therefore it only right to protect him.”

You raised an eyebrow. Interesting. “We will come back to what you have just said however that did not answer the question asked. Did your relationship with Sergeant Barnes affect the causes of the conflict? Yes, or no?”

“Yes.”

“To be clear you are saying that your relationship with Sergeant Barnes was one of the causes of the conflict?”

“No!”

“Then what are you saying? You said just now that your relationship with Barnes affected the causes of the conflict yet when asked if it was a cause of the conflict you said no. How is the world’s population supposed to trust someone who changes their word so quickly? How are supposed to trust someone who lied to their friend for years about a serious trauma that changed their life?”

Steve slammed a fist on the table and stood up. “That has nothing to do with this! You have no right to be digging around into our personal lives! You’re just a stuck up entitled little brat who got mummy and daddy to do everything for you and has never known hardship nor loss. You waltz in here acting so high and mighty from your upper class life knowing nothing about us acting if you’re about to save the world! New flash: you’re not! Take it from someone who has!” Steve’s stature was tense, his jawline clenched as he shouted at you.

An emotionless mask in place, you stood up yourself and gathered your papers back. “That is where you are wrong Captain Rogers, you and I are in fact very similar. We’re both orphans; when I was ten, my parents were out celebrating their anniversary and I stayed at my grandma’s that night. They came to pick me up and on the way back a drunk driver served into our lane on the opposite side of the road. Both parents taken from me instantly leaving only money behind which was quickly taken up by my therapy sessions and my grandma’s healthcare bills meaning money was tight when I was is school. I took an unholy amount of shifts to pay for my Harvard tuition, cashed in my parents life insurance, claimed student loans, even when I was granted a scholarship. I act proud, probably pretentious at times because I need to in order to be taken seriously in my line of work. I’m the youngest senior associate Hughes and Wood has ever had and I’m on track to become the youngest partner so you’ll have to forgive me for being confident in my abilities.”

Steve snorted. “Throw a pity party why don’t you? Want a gold medal?”

Wanda’s eyes flashed red for a second before she spoke. “Steve, I think-“

“No please Y/N L/N, do answer. I think the real question is why should we trust you?! We know nothing about you and yet you know EVERYTHING ABOUT US!”

You finally decided to fight back. Steve had been throwing things at you all day and ever since you met him about how you weren’t wanted nor needed.

“You know what Captain Rogers? If you really don’t want me here then give me a fucking phone call in the morning to cancel the contract! I came here to help Tony. He was my only bloody obligation I had and I signed everybody else in this room on AS A FAVOR! He didn’t ask me to, all he asked me to do was to see if anything could be done. THIS CASE HAS LESS THAN 40% CHANCE OF BEING WON! I knew this yet I’m putting my reputation on the line to help a bunch of people that I DON’T KNOW! I have won every case I have been on and by far this will be the hardest.”

Steve scoffed.

Sam went to speak “Bro I think you need to ca-“

“CALM DOWN?! Is that what you were going to say? I’m not going to calm down when some girl with a holier-than-thou attitude walks in like she owns the place and starts bossing people around!” By this point he was standing right in front of you, less than a foot between you and all the other avengers were standing up as well.

“In case you haven’t noticed, IT IS MY JOB TO BOSS PEOPLE AROUND BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO HELP THEMSELVES IN THE EYES OF THE LAW!”

“WE DO NOT NEED YOUR HELP!”

“YOU NEED TO GROW THE FUCK UP!” You shouted in Steve’s face.

You heard exclaiming from the team and suddenly you were slammed backwards and only just managed to catch yourself before you fell.

Your head was pounding with searing pain.

Your ears rang overwhelmingly.

Your body was going into fight or flight mode.

You swallowed harshly.

“What the fuck?” You whispered. Steve’s fist was still returning to his side as you felt a bruise already forming on the side of your face.

“WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU JUST DO ROGERS!?” Tony’s angry shout snapped you out of your reverie as he made his way to the super soldier.

“You know what Steven Grant Rogers? You can fucking represent yourself in your trial. I’ll be watching of course, as you fail to understand anything going on, the terminology flying over your head. Have you even ever seen the inside of a court room?” Silence met your words. “Didn’t fucking think so. You can kiss your hero life goodbye because you’ll be going somewhere that makes The Raft look like a five star hotel. I believe it’s called Culpas. Spanish for faults, supposedly representing the faults of the universe. Who knows, maybe you might fit right in with the fucking psychopaths?” You hissed before snatching up your folder and storming out the room.
