I love stuff like this. During one of my recent Friends of the Library shopping sprees, I bought this 1961 book, The Fight for the White House: The Story of 1912 by Frank K. Kelly. I started flipping through it today and noticed that it had a signed dedication by the author, which is always a nice little surprised when you buy used books.
But that wasn't all! About halfway through the book, I found this single, loose page of paper written on the author's stationery:
Just from doing a quick Google search, the person that the author, Frank K. Kelly, dedicated and sent the book to, Frank McCulloch, was a very well-known journalist and editor who spent decades working for outlets that included Time Magazine (where he pissed off LBJ while serving as Saigon bureau chief during the Vietnam War and was the last person to interview Howard Hughes), The Sacramento Bee, The Los Angeles Times, and the San Francisco Examiner. McCulloch was apparently so well-regarded that he's been recognized by media/press association halls of fame in both California and Nevada. I just find it fascinating that I randomly picked up this used book (for $1.00!!!) and discovered something that adds a unique little story to this one particular volume of a book published 65 years ago. Without even reading the book yet, it adds character to the actual physical book itself. You can't get that experience with e-books.
Or you could just buy this book.
