Just remembered this sketch dump, based on one of my all time favourite books, Time Salvager (and the sequel, Time Siege) by Wesley Chu.

By the 26th century, technological progress has left the solar system’s resources depleted. The only chance humanity has to survive is in the past— in the hands of the chronmen.

Chronmen travel back in time to salvage what they can, from doomed past events, without endangering the timeline. Without them, the already fragile society would collapse.

Rule number one? Never bring anyone back from the past.

Note to self: Never go on that ‘One Last Job’ before retirement. Especially if you’re a chronman who salvages materials from history to use in the 26th century.

He breaks a pretty big time law and rescues a 21st century scientist who is supposed to die, Elise from dying. Well, that means that his one last job has now turned into being on the run because you do not break a time travel rule. Period.

From there it was quite the thriller. The characters were awesome, and the story was made more interesting because James, the chronman, isn’t exactly the most heroic of heroes. Oh, also there’s a sequel!

If you insist on writing time travel, your best bet is to wait for someone with tenure and grant money to invent time travel for you. Not only will it keep the science authentic, but you can also use the time machine to go back in time and get published before time travel becomes the next big trend.
