This Week’s Story!

On the workshop of Jellichje there was an atmosphere of magical transformation, almost a sacred ritual. The ritual was not concerning the religion, but art. 

We were asked to leave our phones, money, cameras, notebooks, all the devices. Not to dress too warm. Not to take food (except if there is a risk  to faint). We should be pure as newborn souls to (finally!) encounter the reality. 

We were walking in a group, without saying a word, for about half an hour, turning left or right according to some “collective subcoscious”. Then, one by one, we would feel the moment, when fall out of the group. Each had to chose a place where to stop. A place where you can stay for 1.5 hours - purely to observe. You had to collect three things - thoughts, observations.. .Without any possibility to record it except your own brain. 

The lack of recording device first irritated me. “I’ve passed trhough all this” I though. I had moments when the battery of my camera were empty, or card full. And the reality was giving the most unexpected surprises, but - what could I do with them? My urge to record the world around was always immense. That was my pure goal of existense. I was constantly creating a huge load of video footage, photos and sound, without being able to edit it into something comprehensible - just like the character of Cees Noteboom novel “Allerzielen” - seeming to create a universal report about the world, everything and nothing, eternally unfinished “work in progress”. 

 now things changed. I seem to be tired, exhausted from this fruitless practice. I published several books and photo essays. I edited a couple of films. Now I want to do something else. And now I am pure like a baby, ready to be re-born. 

I chose a place near the boats. Above were 2 trees. I was looking at them and because of the process of looking, because of having time to look, their shapes became very vivid to me. I was travelling through their branches with my eyes almost like through a landscape or a map. 

Like a screewriter of Wim Wenders (what’s his name again?..) was saying, that you can read the lines of hills like a book. 

I experienced something about the transformation of time. Suddenly there was so many of it. I was bathing in the showers of time, and that was such a happy feeling. To re-gain the time. To understand that all the time in the universe is yours. I felt like i was falling into something like “time loop” - an experience similar to my childhood, where all the time which you have - you not lose it but gain it. Later I would find another name for it - “time pocket”. 

I brought several observations from this workshop. Some magical doors opened for me. But what I was thinking most - how to express this idea of falling into a secret door in time, into this time pocket, where the time stops posessing you? How to express it with the medium of film? Maybe film form itself - it’s already such a time pocket, allowing people to fall into it, a safety zone, away from all the daily stresses and worries and duties. 

And - what it is, this feeling of time pocket? How to master it?..
