Wóȟpe is the goddess of peace, harmony, and time, and she is the one who brought the peace pipe to the Lakota people.
Wóȟpe was said to have fallen from the sky, like a meteor. Afterwards, she was seen at different times nude and in the most beautiful dress the viewers had ever seen.
She led the Lakota to the place where she would give the pipe by sending up smoke signals in the sky. Once they arrived, Wóȟpe gave them a great feast. After this, she stayed in this camp for several days, and went from tipi to tipi to encourage each person with a revelation. She also passed around a pipe filled with sweetgrass as they had their conversations.
When the time came for her to go, Wóȟpe called all the people together and asked the women to build a fire. The goddess then entered the smoke and disappeared.
To the shamans, it was clear that Wóȟpe had taught them a special ceremony that she intended them to continue. They appointed a custodian for her pipe with instructions that it was to be kept sacred and used only on the most solemn and important occasions. [X]
