Kakuma refugee camp, located in the northwest of Kenya, has been home to tens of thousands of refugees from different parts of the world, including a large number of LGBTIQ individuals who have fled persecution in their home countries. While the camp was designed to provide a safe haven for those fleeing violence and persecution, the reality for LGBTIQ refugees in Kakuma is far from that.
For LGBTIQ refugees, Kakuma can be a place of intense fear and danger. In many of their home countries, homosexuality is criminalized and can be punishable by imprisonment or even death. When they arrive in Kakuma, they are often faced with the same discrimination and violence that they were trying to escape. The camp is overcrowded, with limited resources and services, which makes it difficult for LGBTIQ refugees to find safety and support.
The camp's environment is not welcoming to LGBTIQ refugees, who often face harassment and violence from other refugees and even from the security personnel tasked with protecting them. They are often subjected to physical and verbal abuse, and their safety is not guaranteed. Reports of beatings, rape, and other forms of violence against LGBTIQ refugees in Kakuma are common, and they are often afraid to report these incidents for fear of retaliation.
The lack of privacy in the camp is another major issue for LGBTIQ refugees. They are forced to share living spaces with strangers, and their sexual orientation or gender identity is often exposed, making them vulnerable to harassment and violence. They are also denied the right to form relationships or families, which is a basic human right. LGBTIQ refugees in Kakuma often suffer from depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues, as they are forced to live in constant fear.
