Not entirely sure if you’re asking for writing advice or college advice so I’m gonna do both!

College advice:

Pick a school you feel closest with. I cannot stress how important it is to visit the campuses of your top schools! Take campus tours and get to know what campus life is like, look into the clubs they have, get course plans for the major you’re looking at to see what classes you’ll have to take. If a school offers sleeping bag weekend type of things (more so for your top 3), sign up for it. Sleeping bag weekends are actually really fun, and you get to see what student life is like. You also sleep in the dorms which is a great way to figure out what dorm life is like. But the important thing is you pick a school that you feel you’ll be happiest and most comfortable at.

Join clubs and attend events. Especially your freshman year! You’re not gonna know people when you go into college which is perfectly normal. Everyone there is going to be in a new environment and willing to make friends. I know it’s scary talking to people, but trust me when I say everyone is gonna be scared about meeting new people. You just gotta get out there and get to know others. Also, joining clubs – especially clubs that you’re interested in – is another great way to meet people since you’ll already have a common interest with them. 

Be sure to study and stay on top of school. God, I cannot stress this one enough!! I hecked up my freshman year of college cause I didn’t get my butt in shape when it came to school work, but it’s so important to stay on top of your school work. Do the readings, the homework, study your butt off. Most universities also have free tutoring sessions for classes so sign up and go to them. Find friends who you can have study groups with because that’ll give you a fresh view of the material you’re studying. Just really make sure your grades are good so you don’t regret it in the long run.

Take care of your mental health. Along with tutoring, most universities offer free counseling sessions as well. If you feel like you need to vent to someone or relieve some stress, go see someone about it because it helps a lot. Or maybe go for a walk around the campus you’re at, enjoy the beauty of the campus, and take some time for yourself. Whatever it is, just be sure to take care of yourself mentally because sometimes school can be stressful and it’s nice to relax.

That’s all I can think of for college advice right now. I’m pretty sure I’ll think of more things once I post this, but I think those cover the basics.

Writing advice:

Read, read, read. I say this all the time, others say it, but reading really does help when it comes to flexing your writing skills. Read a variety of genres and authors. See how they write their sentences, how they word things, how they use words to convey emotions, and take notes on it. Don’t copy their stuff, but see how you can incorporate that into your own writing and enhance your skill. There’s always room for improvement even for the best authors out there. Also, sometimes reading helps inspire me to write so yea. 

Always be improving your writing skills. As I said before, there’s always room for improvement. We shouldn’t be stagnant with our writing and should always be looking for ways to improve it. Whether it be by starting small and challenging ourselves to go from writing stories that are 1k to stories that are 50k or writing in a different tense or a different perspective or incorporating different literary techniques (metaphors, imagery, symbolism). There’s always going to be something we can improve on as a writer.

Don’t stop writing. Ever. This will not be easy, I’m not gonna lie. No one starts out as an amazing, perfect writer who can write epic stories and have the most flowing of things. I mean, if you do start out that way, that’s great and I’m glad you sold your soul to Satan, but that’s not how most people start out. The first things you write aren’t going to be that great, and that’s okay. The important thing is you did it. You wrote a story that has a beginning, middle, and end even if it’s just 1k or 500 words. You wrote something which is phenomenal! That’s the best starting point ever. But you gotta keep pushing and improving even if your stories don’t break more than 10 notes or likes or whatever platform you’re posting on. Just keep writing and posting and I promise you, you will get better. Remember, writing is a skill, and like any skill out there, to get better at it, you have to keep doing it and improving.
