That’s exactly how I’ve seen it!!! Even if there wasn’t actively a romantic alternative for Marlya in Val, the relationship between Free and Marlya has been at first a sort of big brother mentor figure, and evolved into equal comrades supporting each other. 

It comes across more like say, the oft-praised Mako and Raleigh in pacific rim where they are supporting each platonically but not making any kind of advances. What they value with each other is that kinship and solid bond with their unit and with the way they can relate to each other and build each up, giving the other a boost when they’re down and a good shake when they’re off the path.

But Marlya and Val… just. There’s so much intimacy and tenderness in the way they act with each other. You can just feel how much Marlya’s heart ached every time they went to fight, how badly she just wanted to stop the fighting. The whole series long we’ve been building on how close they were since they were young, and how much they cared about each other and built their lives on what they learned from the other. 

And when they finally managed to reconcile it looked like the both of them finally had their hearts pieced together again, like everything finally made sense.
