🎲 hey partner
37. A kiss to the back of the neck
It's becoming more common than not that Shamir's going to bed at a more decent hour than she normally does. It's been a mix of grueling work rebuilding the monastery and the relaxing presence of someone else being in the confines of her living quarters-- no, she didn't normally share a room with her partner... but it seemed to be trending toward an inevitability at this point. She was pretty certain the other woman spent more time in Shamir's bed than she did her own. It's too easy, falling into relaxation when Catherine is next to her. Whether they're sitting together and enjoying a meal, or leaning against each other while drifting off to sleep-- it didn't matter. Putting her head on her chest and listening to her heart beating strong had quickly become one of her favorite sounds... not that she'd admit that out loud, and certainly not to Catherine's face. So when she wakes in the morning, arms wrapped around the waist of a familiar body pressed close against her front, she can't really help but smile. With little effort, she shuffles even closer under the sheets, squeezing her companion a little tighter than she was before. Her nose bumps against Catherine's shoulder as she nuzzles the skin there, simply enjoying the familiar scent, almost a bit of an earthy hint underneath the mild scent of the standard shampoo they get from the Monastery's supplies. A further tilt of her head enables her to press a soft kiss to the tanned skin there, letting out a small hum of satisfaction as she does. She leaves a trail from her shoulder to the side of her neck, finally reaching up to move the messy locks of her ponytail to leave a firm kiss against the nape of her neck. "Hey. Time to get up," Shamir mumbles, her voice thick with sleep and a bit scratchy. She doesn't want to move, she wants to stay here for the rest of the day... but someone has to be responsible between the two of them, and it's certainly not Catherine. "Go put some clothes on. We can get breakfast before we head out."
Shamir, Shamir! Did you hear? Lady Rhea's returned to the monastery!! Oh my goddess it's been so long since I've seen her like it must have been a dozen moons or so like this is so crazy do you think she remembers me I mean of course she would she's so thoughtful and caring and
It’s time to stop talking.
Hey gurrrrrrrl, is that a whetstone in your pocket or are you just happy to see me? ;)
"..." Shamir stares at her with a blank expression, and an awkward silence passes between them before he shuts her door right in her face with little hesitation. The click of a lock can be heard immediately after.
"Hey, swordsman! New shipment arrived the other day. This is a hexed shadow sword. You... seem to know something about both magic and swordplay, so I thought I hand it your way."
Catherine turns to leave.
"You gotta make time for your own birthday, y'know."
Niamh has seen the other in passing - she is fairly well regarded, after all, for her talents. An important ally, or worthy opponent? Could be both, given the opportunity the mock battles provide them.
Still, it is not within her calculations that a sword of this caliber would be passed to her. Her voice speaks a quiet, "Thank you..." as she weighs the sword in her hands.
On the inside, eyes are alight with wonder and awe. She's rarely come by a sword like this. Fought those with one, perhaps, but to have one to call her own...
wait.
Birthday?
She grants another nod of thanks. This would be...the second she's celebrated. She's still rather new to it all. But she knows who to find later today.

"Shamir, get over here! I know you've got no plans today, so I've organized something special!"
For all her loud bravado, Catherine didn't actually want to tease Shamir this time. For one, it was her birth date, so some respect should be in order, per her upbringing; but lately, Catherine had been trying to be more complying to Shamir's wants. Mostly, toning it down in the joking around department.
She holds up a bottle of wine and two mugs, looking for matching excitement in Shamir's eyes.
"Didn't think I forgot your birthday, didja?" Her offer already proposed, she strides to her archer's side, darting in for a quick kiss on the cheek before Shamir can complain. "Heh. There's more where that came from too, later," she murmurs under her breath. Juuuust loud enough for her partner to hear.
Peeling off of her, she winks, and gives Shamir's side a hearty nudge. "There's a magic show in the market soon. We can drink while we watch, yeah? And I'm not accepting any excuses, partner."
It doesn't take a genius to put two and two together when it comes to Catherine calling out to her-- in fact, she had kind of been avoiding her for a majority of the day for this specific reason alone. It's a sweet thought on her partner's account, truly... but is it really necessary? Years have passed since she even bothered to celebrate her birthday; there wasn't a reason to start now. Regardless, the archer heaves a big sigh before turning to face her. The bottle of wine is rather tempting, Shamir's eyes flitting between Catherine's face and the label on the bottle. It seems to be a vintage that she doesn't recognize, and she wonders briefly how much it cost. She doesn't get a chance to put too much thought into it, though, when Catherine presses her lips to Shamir's cheek. She's caught off-guard by the motion and the words that follow, blinking up at her partner with a bewildered expression for a few moments... before it all catches up to her and she lets out a low-toned chuckle. "Easy, tiger. You haven't even taken me to dinner first," Shamir reaches up to gently press her palm to Catherine's cheek for a brief moment, more fondness seeping into her expression than she initially intends. "You're lucky you're as good-looking as you are; I don't think I'd put up with the antics otherwise." It's a joke, obviously, indicated by the way Shamir's lips turn upwards into a small smile. She presses closer, falling into step at Catherine's side and slipping her palm into one of her larger hands, fingers interlocking as she gives it a light squeeze. Were there more people around, she wouldn't be caught dead doing this-- but she's gone out of her way to show Shamir care that she hadn't felt in.... years. That she hadn't felt since she had a place to belong to, the mercenaries she once called friends all buried at unmarked graves in the countryside of Dagda. She had more reasons to live, now. One of which comes in the form of sunshine personified, boisterous and bold in a way that forces you to be endeared by the quality. Shamir never stood a chance. Leaning to the side, she rests her head against the slope of her ever-reliable partner's shoulder, allowing her eyes to slowly fall shut. There’s no warmth like hers, melting even the most frigid parts of Shamir’s exterior with little effort.
"... Thank you, Catherine.”
There’s words she wants to speak, but now is not the time or place— yet she takes the moment to think them, over and over again, wishing that she could simply make Catherine feel her love in the same way Shamir does.
“Let’s go, then. It’s rude to keep a lady waiting, after all.”
Catherine waits among the knights, simply an onlooker to the spectacle of the Battle of Eagle and Lion about to unfold. Shamir had planned to participate for some reason, Catherine couldn't tell if it was one her dry jokes or not. So, she wasn't exactly prepared to see that usual green jacket armed with a red bandana on its sleeve, walking cooly onto the field of battle.
Catherine cups her hands to her mouth, shouting out,
"Shamir! Better go easy on the kids, you hear?"
Maybe Catherine would get a kick out of the event this year after all.
That oh-so-familiar voice that rings out across the clearing manages to bring the smallest hint of a smile to her face as she turns her head to make eye contact with the Knight drawing her attention. She offers a small wave along with a chuckle, making a mental note to thank her for the support later— even if it was a bit ridiculous.
“I can’t make any promises,” Shamir quips, brow arching. “Make sure you watch closely, partner— I’m sure I can teach you a trick or two.”
It’s a taunt, obviously so, and as she turns her attention back to the faculty making last minute preparations, she silently tucks that gesture of care into her heart— that warmth will serve to guide her forward, and she can’t possibly make a poor show of being an equal to Thunder Catherine.
"Aw, no sweets in return?"
Catherine leans against the wall, smug, as Shamir rounds the corner. She's been looking for her all day, but right now? Now it was time to play the role of partner.
"You know, a month after the day of devotion, they say the other person's supposed to give back in return." She knows she's pushing her luck, or at the very least, pushing Shamir's buttons. But she can't resist.
"So, c'mon Shamir, where's my sugar?"
This wasn't something unexpected-- it was only a matter of time before Catherine tracked her down to make some off-handed joke about today's "topic", and Shamir's swift roll of her eyes is enough of an expression of how ridiculous she finds it all to be. "I believe I've paid you back tenfold," She quips as she raises a gloved hand as a means of dismissal, though her eyes don't leave the other's face. "But I can't say I'm surprised to hear that you're as susceptible to greed as everyone else is." It's a swift movement for Shamir to step into the other Knight's space, deft fingers taking Catherine's chin in a firm hold as she forces her to tilt her head down. A slight tilt of her head, and she leans in to press a feather-light kiss to the other's lips for only the briefest of moments-- by the time she pulls away, she looks far more satisfied than she did 5 minutes ago. "I did manage to get my hands on one of those ... awful meat pies that you seem to enjoy. Meet me on the roof?"
