Attack On Titan Anime Review - Season 3 Episode 14 Thunder Spear
Hange Zoe by IlunaNeko
The above is Hange Zoe armed with thunder spear cosplay, by IllunaNeko on DA. The one below is my art. I thought it was super cool so I told IllunaNeko in DA (She’s not on Tumblr :( ) that I wanted to ref her cosplay. She was really cool with it. Thanks IllunaNeko. I added the patch because it looks so badass :D
the gear in attack on titan is interesting

question on Thunder Spears translation
What do you think about the name ‘thunder spear’? Shouldn’t it be 'lightning spear’ as lightning would’ve damaged that tree Hanji showed the squad; lightning would have the explosive capabilities to accomplish that, thunder is just the sound it would make. I personally think it may have been a mistranslation.
Thank you @enjikinda for this question, I hope you won’t mind that I made this separate post to explain, the original post content is too long.
The original name is 雷槍=らいそう (Rai Sou) 雷 = thunder/lightning bolt 槍 = spear
When the term made its debut in ch 75, it was not explained what is the reason behind its naming. In Japanese, whether when someone is struck by lightning or it is thundering, same [雷] kanji is used.
雷に打たれた = struck by lightning 雷が鳴っている = it is thundering
I translated it as ‘Thunder Spear’ because it was rough translation, but apparently crunchyroll also uses the same term. I think I can understand why we chose the word “Thunder” instead of “Lightning” is because in Japan there is the term called “雷神” = God of Thunder. I viewed the kanji as an element [thunder element] and I suspect the same thing happened for the crunchyroll translator.
Now we already know the reason behind it’s naming and my friend pointed out to me that both name can work too, thunder for the loud explosion because they did all cover their ears and lightening for the blast. But I think ‘lightning spear’ sounds more accurate after finding out the naming reason. Hope this helps.
