It's not an M.2 SSD, it's a USB flash drive inside.
It's not USB 3.1, it's USB 2.0.
The drives that claim to be absurdly high, like 2 terabytes, are actually 32gb with a controller chip telling the computer they're bigger. Result being that if you put on more than 32gb everything is corrupted because the previous data gets 'overlapped'.
And here's what it looks like inside:
A bare USB thumbdrive inside a USB-A to USB-C adaptor.
I suppose that if you had a large bare USB thumbdrive for whatever reason (someone stepped on your swag stick or USB button?) you could put it in here and have it protected, or if you like a pretty aluminum case, this is one way to go. I got mine for $5 at Habitat, thinking it actually was 2tb and/or an M.2 case. Actual size 32gb.
TO BE FAIR: the Temu listing in this post might be legit because 256gb USB drives at that price point do exist (but I'm sure they're still USB 2.0) and none will be M.2's, but at one time Temu did offer the 2gb models. Amazon still does! Shame on them, shame on their cows!
Related: Temu wised up and took the "USB 3.1 2tb jackknife USB sticks" off the site, far as I can tell, but their true capacity is 64gb and they suck donkey balls with their stunningly terrible transfer rates.
So what do you do if you wind up with one of these? Going into the Disk Manager on your computer, deleting the partition, then repartitioning as their true size makes the drive useable without collisions. (Just repartitioning the whole thing or using Diskpart to 'clean' doesn't change the reported size, you have to tell it how big it is.)
Disk Manager is still going to claim you're only using ##gb out of 2tb, but My Computer will show the usable capacity correctly.
