Thronewarden (Gunslinger Archetype)
A bodyguard has to have a keen mind capable to seeing trouble brewing from afar and quick reactions to protect their charge from danger.
Perhaps it’s the musketeer concept, or the intersection between rugged gunslinger and grim, determined bodyguard, but the idea of a bodyguard to nobility that is a master marksman has a lot of appeal, and today’s subject is exactly that.
These thronewardens not only have the reactions and canny to keep their charge safe on their own, but they can also spur allies, fellow bodyguards and otherwise, to action, as well as use their firearm to their advantage to deter foes, as we’ll see below.
As one might imagine, these gunslingers have incredible reactions, moving so fast they often find themselves moving even before they are aware of the specifics of the danger.
Their steely senses also give them the edge when reading a situation, allowing them to expend grit to be especially vigilant.
This archetype also comes with two deeds. The first gives them a knack for deliberately missing a foe, aiming their shots right before the direction of their movement, making them hesitate at a crucial moment to prevent or at least slow their actions.
The second of these deeds lets them fire a shot into the air, not to startle, but to get the attention of allies, allowing them to better react to oncoming danger.
While simple, this archetype provides lots of advantages against ambushes and deception, not only better picking up on the danger, but also acting quickly during the surprise round, even granting allies their own surprise round. Definitely build for a lot of grit and various feats like bodyguard and others that help protect your allies and ward.
I almost guarantee you that any gunslinger of this archetype probably has an interesting backstory as to how they became a bodyguard, but in general, an iconic theme should be duty and loyalty, either the devotion to those ideals or the struggle to understand them.
The court wizard’s research has paid off, and in order to clear the undead from the fallen fortress Ironbound, the prince must say a prayer for the fallen from atop the power. He will have his trusty bodyguard with him, but the undead there are ruled by a fearsome geist whom holds a grudge against the royal family.
Reflexively going for their gun, the bodyguard of Lord Kalim shot the ambassador from Holvik dead. The bodyguard claims that the ambassador was about to attack, but no weapon was found, and the Holvikians cry foul play. Perhaps an outside party can investigate to discover the truth behind this tragedy?
While thought of as a tribal people, the lizardfolk still hold onto some bastions of civilization, like the distant Rouka Empire, where feather-clad reptilian nobles are flanked by musket-armed guards, deciding policy.
