In Spiritual Cultivation, Which Vehicle Do We Choose?
In spiritual cultivation, there are many teachings we can practice and many paths we can take. Since people are of different capabilities, the Buddha gave teachings according to their capabilities. For example, the Buddha taught the Four Noble Truths on the existence of suffering, the cause of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the way to end suffering. Upon hearing the teachings, people of different capabilities respond differently to suffering and choose different ways of practice.  Those with weak faculties choose the teachings of the sravaka vehicle.  Those with medium faculties choose the teachings of the pratyekabuddha vehicle.  Those with sharp faculties choose the teachings of the bodhisattva vehicle. Even though the Buddha gave three different types of teachings (sravaka vehicle, pratyekabuddha vehicle, and bodhisattva vehicle), that was his skilling means of guiding people to learn the Dharma.  His ultimate goal is to inspire everyone to choose the bodhisattva vehicle because one must go through the Bodhisattva Path in order to attain Buddhahood.
When the Buddha said that life is impermanent and full of suffering and that creating negative karma brings about suffering, those with weak faculties try to avoid negative karma by avoid dealing with people or worldly matters as there’s a risk of creating negative karma when interacting with people and dealing with matters especially when they encounter bad people and temptations. To attain liberation from suffering, these people choose the sravaka vehicle as their way of cultivation, and they practice the teachings of the Four Noble Truths.
Those with medium faculties, upon learning the teachings on suffering, seek to attain liberation from suffering by cultivating themselves to attain enlightenment. By observing phenomena in nature, such as the wilting and falling of flowers, they come to realize that life is impermanent and full of suffering and emptiness. To get rid of suffering, they focus on cultivating themselves. They repent for the wrongs and the negative karma they’ve done and strive to eliminate their afflictions and ignorance. These people choose the pratyekabuddha vehicle as their way of cultivation, and they practice the teachings of the Twelve Links of Interdependent Co-arising.
Those with sharp faculties, upon learning the teachings on suffering, give rise to great compassion and aspire to not only liberate themselves from suffering but also to alleviate the suffering of living beings. They seek to attain enlightenment for themselves as well as help living beings attain enlightenment.  Whatever benefits they’ve gained from the teachings, such as developing wisdom and creating blessings, they also want others to gain the same benefits. These people choose the bodhisattva vehicle as their way of cultivation, and they practice the teachings of the Six Paramitas.
Yet, walking the Bodhisattva Path is not easy. It requires us to go among people and help those in need. In the process, we will interact with people of all sorts, nice people or difficult people.  We’ll also encounter various situations and deal with challenging matters. Many are obstacles that test our perseverance on the path, our faith in the Buddha’s teachings, and our wisdom in overcoming these challenges. Because of this, some people do not aspire to walk the Bodhisattva Path. It is a difficult path, and they choose the sravaka vehicle or the pratyekabuddha vehicle.Â
In the Lotus Sutra, the Buddha compared the three vehicles as three carts, the goat cart, the deer cart, and the great white ox cart.  The goat cart is the sravaka vehicle. The deer cart is the pratyekabuddha vehicle. The ox cart is the bodhisattva vehicle.
Dharma Master Cheng Yen uses the metaphor of a grass field to describe the differences between the three vehicles. The person who chooses the goat cart can only benefit one person. Since the goat cart is a small vehicle, it can only carry one person. When the person does good deeds, he asks blessings for himself and for his family to be safe and well.  This kind of doing good seeks returns which is just for the practitioner himself to be safe and well.
A person who chooses the deer cart will invite other people to join him.  People will then have blessings.  People would go and find out that there’s a vast grass field that is very rich.  They then invite others to go to this grass field to relax and enjoy the environment.  However, this kind of enjoyment does not last. It’s like when there are many goats and deer graze on the grass and there’s no rain to keep the grass growing, all the grass will eventually be eaten and gone.
What is needed is a great ox cart. A person who chooses the great ox cart can carry people to a field that is even more fertile.  That place has resources, such as water, sun, and fresh air.  More people can enjoy the wonderful grass land and live a long life. The great ox cart can give people more resources.  This is the Bodhisattva Path.
On the path of spiritual cultivation, at various stages, we practice the teachings of all three vehicles. When we encounter obstacles on the Bodhisattva Path, we might get discouraged in dealing with difficult people and we fall back to practice the teachings of the sravaka vehicle to focus on cultivating ourselves. After we’ve strengthened our spirituality and gained more courage, wisdom, and compassion, we then again aspire to practice the teachings of the bodhisattva vehicle.Â
The Buddha says that everyone has the Buddha nature and has the potential to become a Buddha, so he made it his mission to guide people to attain Buddhahood, and he would like everyone to do the same as him. Thus, on the spiritual path, no matter what difficulties we encounter and which vehicles we choose to practice at a particular time, remember that, in the end, we are to choose the bodhisattva vehicle. This is the biggest vehicle that can carry the most people to enlightenment.
