Found this friend, not sure what it is? Its front legs were like the ones you find on a mantis (they're folded in the photo). Any clue of what it could be?
Oh myyyyyy what a great find! It’s a thread-legged bug. I’ve never seen one in person and I’d lose my mind if I did. You’re right, they have the grasping front limbs similar to mantids which they use to catch their prey. They’re actually a type of assassin bug, though, in the family Reduviidae. Here’s a clearer picture of a similar species for your enjoyment:

Thanks so much for sharing! As always, submissions don’t count towards the one (1) nice bug per day.

Bug of the Day
Found this thread-legged assassin bug (Emesaya brevipennis) on the screen of my porch last night. It’s so long a stringy-looking, it’s impossible to show how weird it is with just one photo. Check out the spikes on those forelegs!
Bug of the Day
This is a cruddy photo, because I am still duking it out with the new digicam (why is it defaulting to an ISO of 800 or more, old similar cam defaulted to ISO of 320 or 400???), but it’s a new thread-legged bug for the yard, Empicoris errabundus, which is pretty cool.
