That is very impressive! It's a thread-legged bug, which is a type of assassin bug. Love their grabby front legs! Some species specialize in eating spiders, so that would explain the ease of web-walking.

do you know about the subfamily Emesinae in Reduviidae? i did not until very recently and now i have to share the joy. they are assassin bugs cosplaying as stick bugs i love them

But there are no native mantis to the UK that I'm aware of. I'm making a temporary home for it for now as I don't want to kill it, nor do I want to release an invasive species.
It's not a mantis and it's not invasive! It's a thread-legged bug, which is a type of assassin bug - hence the raptorial forelimbs that make it look like a mantis. So feel free to release it :)

A stick bug/mantid mashup is a pretty apt description wtih those raptorial forelegs and twiggy body! The grabby hands are a good indication this is a predator, so that tells you it’s not a stick bug. This friend is actually a thread-legged bug, which is a type of assassin bug!

Great find! This adorable friend is a thread bug, Empicoris rubromaculatus, which is a species of thread-legged bug in the subfamily Emesinae. Thread-legged bugs are in the family Reduviidae - assassin bugs! They’re ambush predators, which explains their grabby front legs used for snatching prey. :)

Caught two of these today. They fly on those tiny wings, and not very well!
