It is not a Dorset button as I threatened, but I saw a cool tutorial from fabricnfiction.com on making these and thought that'd be a good starting point.
It's just perle cotton! But it feels quite sturdy. I switched the direction of my blanket stitch midway so it's not as tidy as it could be, but it's still perfectly functional. I'm going to use this on my Regency(ish) shirt.
