Oh but you ENJOY me being a danger, don't pretend otherwise <3 thank you, I am READY to get to work eheh
Nightmares & Sleeping Prompt Meme
"Would it help if I stayed?"
For Leona, providing food security has always meant multiple things at once.
None of the books she read during the adoption process seemed to ever agree on anything, true enough, but she has learnt plenty from watching her son and his friends at play, as well from a smidge of common sense - a criminally underused tool, she'd say, if anyone thought to ask her. Most of those kids are much too familiar with hunger and instability for someone as young as them, and they treat food as something they'd never expect to be entrusted to them ever again.
So yes, Leona has fought this with all the weapons at her disposal, in the past few years. She has left snacks in easily accessible spots; she has never scolded anyone for asking for seconds; and she has vowed to always, always ensure that no one in her house ever has to go hungry again. She's not sure she has done enough, but she'd hoped the worst of it would be behind them, after a vaguely rocky start.
What she hadn't expected was to find her son and stepson eating cereal and milk in the middle of the night, at the grand hour of two in the morning.
"Is everything alright, boys?" She asks, voice low, wrapping her robe tighter around herself - she'd have liked not to frighten them, but any sound would be enough to break the silence, this late in the day. Their heads swivel around like those of startled birds, their eyes tired and wide, and though Pierrot replies with practised ease, Leona knows better than to be fooled by it, at this point in life.
"We were just craving a snack," he says, far too casually. "Is that alright?"
"Of course." As if she'd ever be able to give him any other answer! "Just remember to put your bowls in the sink when you're done, will you?"
They hum in unison, but they don't go back to eating, instead watching her warily, bare-footed and tousled-haired prey animals perched on her kitchen stools. Leona hesitates, wondering if she should say anything else, then notices they have left the milk carton out of the fridge - she mentally thanks her luck for the chance at a distraction, and moves to put it back on its shelf, turning her back to the boys.
It works. Soon she can hear the spoons clinking behind her again as her kids resume eating, though they don't speak a single word to each other, the only foreign sound the buzzing of the open fridge - she stares at the produce stored in it for far too long before sighing and steeling herself, knowing she can't linger any longer.
She doesn't look back to them as she poses her question, though. That, too, is an act she's had to learn to calibrate well since she became a mother.
"Was it nightmares again?"
There is a long pause, enough that Leona fears there won't be any answer. Then a whisper, almost unintelligible, so low it could belong to either of them: "Yeah."
Leona nods to herself. She'd expected that, at least. "Would it help if I stayed? Or would you guys rather be alone?"
She does turn around, this time, and as such she catches them exchanging a conflicted glance. If she had to wager, she'd say Pinocchio is the one who woke them both up - he looks tenser, his face more drawn and his eyes hollow, and he's more prone to nightmares than his stepbrother anyway - but it's not for her to know, if they don't want to tell her. Her duty is to wait, like an open door welcoming weary travellers.
Then Pierrot shrugs, the ghost of a smile on his lips. "No, it's fine. You can stay, if you want."
"Thank you."
Leona doesn't get any food for herself - she doesn't have the stomach of a teenager anymore, could never digest anything past 10PM as they seem to be able to do - but she sits next to them all the same, for fear of looking like she's hovering. They don't say anything else to her, but Pinocchio shifts position ever so slightly, closer, so that his elbow brushes past hers every time he moves.
And when Pierrot offers her a marshmallow from his bowl, she accepts it oh so carefully before she puts it in her mouth, as the infinitely precious thing it is.
so, I will give you plenty of options here but: 13, 20, 30 or 47 for Pinocchio/Lampwick for the prompt meme, if you fancy it? :^) <3
THANK YOU SO MUCH 💖💖💖 I've already said that you're an awful enabler, but I'm so happy to write more about The BoysTM that I really don't mind.
Also, actual fic content under the cut because I wrote...two...so it got kinda long...It could have been three, but @freenklin-labby asked for 20 as well, so that's getting a separate, angsty fic ;^)

I can’t even call this a vine comp because it’s a mix of clips from everywhere but...here’s another little video for @naivesilver‘s thousand problems verse :)
After being blessed by @naivesilver with a vine comp for my own silly little AU, I decided immediately that I wanted to return the favour :^) Enjoy~
