Hey, I’d just like to say that I love Thony. He’s great.
I’m glad! Thoney is good times, also a weirdly elusive character for the fans. I remember when the episodes with Thoney came out people were like “I picture Thoney as iron man” and I was like… HOW?
apparently in comics at the time Tony Stark was director of shield, so people were like “A guy named T[h]on[e]y who has a flying ship, I see what you did there, nudge nudge doublewink” and I’m like... HOW?
On the other side of that, I guess since he’s a little old artificer man it got people thinking that he was a gnome. I guess because of tinkery gnomes from D&D and Warcraft. But of course, Thoney is human, you can be a little inventor man and not be a gnome.
I'm thinking we need to start #gnomegate on Twitter. What do you think?
I think the 8 or so “Thoney is not a gnome” posts I made are already 7 too many.
Mystery solved. Episode #39, S2-26 Stop Loitering Around My Weasel Stand! When the Proud Baroness' oasis cloak is dropped, Rob makes the comment "Silly gnomes and their illusions." (19:42) We can all breathe a collective with of "Thanks, ROB!"
Rob was only tapping into a bigger vein. None of the people who have told me they thought Thoney was a gnome justified it with “Rob said so.”
Again, in a game like Critical Hit, which uses the gaming lingua franca of D&D, people come in with all sorts of expectations. After years, maybe even decades, of things being done a certain way, it’s very difficult to change those expectations.
Surprised at all the people commenting about being shocked Thoney wasn't a gnome, I never got a gnome vibe from him, though I may have had a steampunk doc brown in my head the whole time......
It’s a fundamental issue of the medium. Sometimes you can describe something a thousand times and the players (and in this case listeners) will add or change things to match their expectations. There’s an episode in Celestial Crusade where I describe a dome-like structure but one of the players keeps calling it a tower. I explain to him that it’s not a tower, but it does not penetrate. I think the word “tower” even made it onto the episode title.
I got a thousand of these. I played a triceratops man once who I described several times as having black scales, but the GM had it in his head that he was green. And so, eventually I just made him green, because I wasn’t that attached to the black scales (and it was harder to draw).
Aaactually, I just remembered too getting a bunch of e-mails of people saying “a guy with an airship named T(h)on(e)y? I can’t help but picture him like Iron Man”. Because when those episodes were first coming out Iron Man was tied up with Shield in the comics and flying around on a hellicarrier. You can’t remove people’s expectations or connections, but you can try and fight them, I guess.
