Actually, more than that. I feel at home already.Â
I glance over at the clock as the last of the men stumble their way out of the pub. I smile to myself as I hear them singing and laughing with each other, all the way down the street. Happy customers.Â
I poured the beer. I made sure there were no fights. Nothing was damaged or broken. I made chatted with the men and women, making them laugh as I tried to make sure I left my best impression on them. Incase the Shelbyâs wanted to ask around about what people thought of me.Â
I felt like I had found my feet after only one night, but the relief doesnât last long.
I know I havenât gotten the job yet. In fact, the Shelbyâs could walk in here right now and thank me for my time before sending me on my way. I try to push the thought of homelessness or having to clean peoples houses for a living out of my mind as I count up the last of the till. This is all I know. This is what Iâm good at. I need this job.
I sweep and mop the floors, and wipe down all the surfaces, making sure everything is neat and tidy.Â
A peace of my heart has fallen in love with the Garrison already.Â
Earlier in the night, John Shelby and some of the younger Shelby boys and their friends had stopped in for drinks. It was Saturday night after all. The boys were hitting the town. They had their own private room, and I made sure they were tended to like kings. I was fast and discreet, remembering their orders and topping them up with fresh glasses any time they ran out before they even had to ask.Â
My only reassurance, is when John pulled me aside just before 11pm.
âZoe, right?â He had asked me, as he joined me behind the bar and started helping me pour beers during a busy rush.Â
âYouâre good at this, you know, like really goodâ He had smiled at me âTommy told me to stop by-â
âTo make sure I hadnât burned the place down yet?â I joke, earning a laugh.Â
âIâm putting in a good word for you, I just want you to know thatâ he touches my shoulder reassuringly âMaybe itâs that Iâm younger, more with the times than the others, but I think you would be good for the place. Bring some life back in hereâ
I smile at him warmly, turning my attention away from the beers I was pouring to make sure I have him my full presence. Him doing me this favour means more to me than he could imagine. Everything is riding on this. Ever since I gave up my fathers pub, Iâve felt so lost. Just one night at the Garrison and I feel like Iâm back in my element. More than needing money, I think I need this job for my sanity.Â
âSo youâre the softie of the Shelbyâs huh?â I grin, handing him a beer âThat means a lot to me John. Thank youâ I add sincerely.Â
âSee you tomorrow then heyâ he smiles back, heading back to the others.Â
I knew from that moment that John and I would be friends. Similar in age. And he had looked out for me when the rest were ready to dismiss me at first glance. He even reminded me of my own brother.Â
Smiling to myself at the thought of the exchange with John, I head over to the front doors to lock them and close up for the night.Â
Right as I reach up to close the latch at the top of the door, it suddenly swings open.Â
And there he is. Thomas Shelby.Â
I take a few steps backwards, moving out of his way.Â
Like earlier in the day, he looks me up and down before giving me a firm nod. I guess that was his way of greeting me. So much for âhelloâ.Â
He brushes past me, and begins to make a lap around the empty Pub. It takes me a few seconds to realise heâs examining the place. Checking that nothing is out of order. I clasp my hands behind my back, wringing them tightly. I donât want him to see my nerves.Â
âThe till is balanced, place is clean, everyone is gone and safe and everything is prepped for tomorrowâ I inform him, but he barely even notices. Despite my reassurance, he makes his way behind the bar to check that the money is all in order.Â
âI didnât steal anything, before you askâ I say, slightly offended that he wonât take my word that I can manage the pub.Â
He counts the money in silence, and takes one last look around the Pub before finally turning to me.Â
When his eyes meet mine, theyâre just as piercing as they were 12 hours ago when we first met. Something about them makes you stand still, frozen. They are crystal clear blue, but it is still impossible to read him. To know what is about to come out of his mouth.Â
âGood. You didnât burn the place downâ
Seriously.
Any nerves I had fall away, as I am overcome with frustration. That is all he has to say to me? Is he embarrassed that I proved him wrong?
âThank you is generally the word that people go withâ I retort.
âThank youâ he replies condescendingly, almost mocking me.Â
I sigh. I expected a lot of things. But I didnât expect him to literally send me on my way without even giving me a fair chance.Â
âWhatâs it going to take?â I ask, exasperated. Iâm tired. Iâve just worked all night. Iâm beyond entertaining this man any longer âJust tell me what I have to do?â
But he doesnât speak. Of course he doesnât. He just studies me. Itâs like I can see his brain ticking.Â
Until I get an idea.
âYou know what. Sit down. Iâm making you a drinkâÂ
âNo,â he interrupts her immediately âI have to go and-â
âCome on,â I cut him off, with nothing left to lose âAppease meâÂ
He takes a deep breathing, looking up to the ceiling as if heâs trying to gather patience âFine. One drinkâÂ
I burst into a wide grin, feeling like I have a chance again. With a spring in my step, I make my way around the bar, concocting the same drink I used to make for my father.Â
When I place it down in front of him, he examines it, a disapproving look on his face.Â
âOh come on I didnât poison itâ
âNot funnyâ he shakes his head, before bringing it to his lips hesitantly.Â
He takes a sip. And another. And another.Â
I got him.
He finishes the drink, and I smirk, waiting for him to admit that it was good.Â
âOkay so you can make a drinkâ I dismisses me, unimpressed.Â
This man is something else. I canât pick him.Â
âAlrightâ I shake my head, giving up âJust tell me what youâre thinkingâ
He pauses âI donât know if I trust youâ
âIâm not asking to run your businessâ I reassure him âIâm asking to pour beer so I can afford somewhere to liveâ
âWell I donât know anything about youâ he retorts âI need to know who Iâm letting into this familyâ
âYou havenât asked me anythingâÂ
He opens his mouth to reply, but closes it again. He knows Iâm right.Â
âYouâve only jumped to conclusions about me. So go on, what do you want to know? Iâm an open bookâÂ
He shakes his head, taking less time in between replying now. Like Iâve gotten him fired up and his normally carefully crafted responses are getting hastier.Â
âI donât want to know your favourite colour, I want to know that you donât have ulterior motivesâ He reveals.Â
âI doâ I reply shortly âWho doesnât?â
He glares at me.
âI want to live in the country. I want to save my money and buy a place. I want to live comfortably. I want to work and be treated like an equal. This may come as a shock to you, but I have no idea who you are and who your family is. I moved here one week ago. The only jobs going are for nannyâs and maids. I saw the ad. I put my name down because Iâm good at this. And I donât want to clean someoneâs house for a living. So thereâŚâ I pause, letting my words sink âNot everyone has sinister motives you knowâ
And for the first time, heâs looking at me like heâs actually listening. Like he doesnât have anything else to say. I search his face, trying to find some kind of indication. Did I go too far? Did I cross a line?Â
âAnd itâs purpleâ I add, trying to lighten the mood âMy favourite colour is purpleâ
And all of a sudden, he laughs. Okay, maybe it was more of a scoff. But it is the most emotion Iâve seen on his face all day.Â
He shakes is head at me, like heâs astonished that I wonât give up.Â
âLotâs of business goes down here. You do not utter a word of it to anyoneâ He says seriously, his face turning grave and serious.Â
âI get paid to listen, not to talkâ I nod.
He nods back, and then, he holds a hand out.Â
Oh my god. Heâs offering me the job.
I quickly take his hand, shaking it firmly to try and show confidence.Â
With that, he heads back towards the doors that he came in.
âSee you tomorrow, Bossâ I call out to him, unable to contain my excitement.
He looks back at me, shaking his head, but I swear I could see the faintest smile on his hollow cheeks.Â

tommy sat in his big leather chair, looking around the book stuffed walls of his office. he could not bring hisself to distract him with all the papers in front of him, wich were waiting to be filled out. in the last months tommy tried everything to find you. he contacted all your friends, your family even the old man who owned the little bookshop, you would sometimes spend hours in, if you maybe recently had stopped by to ask for any new books. but there was no trail to be find wich would lead to you. his hands were on his temple, while taking advantage of the calmness spreading through the arrow house to think once a again about your location.
tommy had left grace after he found out about the truth and told her, just like she did to you, that he would give her a taste of her own medicine if she ever showed up here again.
tommy rushed through the big doors of the arrow house. francis came into the hall to take his coat and put it in the wardrobe for him, but he told her off and hurried up the stairs quickly. he entered the bedroom to face his wife. grace looked up from her dressing table and a wide smile hushed across her face as soon as she saw tommy. âyou are back so early i th-â she started but stopped quickly as she saw the death stare in tommyâs eyes. her smile fell and she looked confused. âwhat happened? you look at me like i killed somebodyâ grace asked now raising to her feet.
tommy signed deeply, before approaching her slowly. âwell grace, emotionally you did.â he said now standing in front of her. she looked even more flustered. âtommy, what do you mean?â grace asked. he looked at her for a few moments, before giving the answer for his behavior away. âyou know curly was at the stables and he surprisingly told be, that you choked y/n nearly to death. on our wedding day.â graceâs face fell. tommy could see the shock in her eyes but he was even more shocked, as he heard what grace said next.
âtommy, she looked at you like she was the bride and you were the groom on my own wedding! i know you guys know each other for a while but we all knew at some point you had to make a decision. her or me, and since iâm your wife i made that decision for you, as it concerns me as much.â she said now turning around again to sit at her dressing table and fix her hair, thinking the conversation was over, as tommy grabbed her wrist.
âeverybody warned me about you, but i was so blind i couldnât see how you hurt me and the ones i love.â he spat through gritted teeth and paused for a second. looking around their bedroom. âyou pack all of your things and you leave my fucking house. if you are still here when i come back, iâm going to make sure that you leave and never come back myself.â tommy threatened now letting go of her wrist in a forceful movement.
grace face went flustered. she opened her mouth, but closed it again quickly, not knowing what to say. as tommy turned on his heel to leave the room, she stammered nervously: âwhat- tommy, iâm your wife! you choose this rat over me?â tommy froze and stopped his movements immediately. he slowly turned around and said in a low voice. âyou are no longer my wife. you are fucking dead to me, now you heard what i said. pack your things and leave, iâm not going to repeat myself.â he now left the room and let the door fall shut in a loud bang.
a knock on his office door lead him back to reality. he mumbled out a âcomeâ as the door opened. he saw francis face. âmr. shelby your aunt is hereâ she informed him. âlet her inâ he said, not looking up from his desk. he heard francis leaving the room and polly entering it a few seconds later. he already prepared himself about the comments he would have to hear about him being an idiot letting y/n go, as if he didnât think that of himself. âfor fucks sake tommy, you canât just sit around here and do nothing. that wonât bring her backâ
he signed loudly. âpolly donât you think it is in my interest to bring her back too? i searched fucking everywhere i asked fucking everyone and i couldnât fucking find her okay?â he said not knowing what to do anymore. polly looked at him, like she was reading his mind. after a moment she broke the silence again. âwhat, are you going to give up now? thomas, she is the one who gave light to this broken family and i will not tolerate you letting go of this that easily. you will find her and bring her back to the shelbyâs alright? i want to see my little girl againâ polly said annoyed from tommyâs weak excuse.
y/n practically grew up with the shelbyâs after her parents died and she stayed with her uncle, who lived next to the betting shop. y/n was like the daughter polly never had and it truly broke her heart, that she was gone, because her nephew was blindly in love with a spy. polly left his office as fast as she entered it, not giving him a chance to answer her demand.
tommyâs several tries to find you stayed without success for years and he really lost his hope finding you. you probably went to another continent started a new life there, leaving the dark birmingham behind you. at least that was was he hoped. you could also be dead, but he shook that thought away quickly banning it out of his head. he could never in a million years forgive himself, if you got killed because you left on account of him.
he was on his way to an auction of race horses. he wanted to start doing legal business, so he had something good to distract him from you. he sat in the cart with john, charlie, curly, arthur and michael, taking a long drag from his cigarette, closing his eyes and leaning back. arthur sat next to him and looked at his younger brother. a little bit of worry flashed over his face, but he decided to be optimistic. âcommon brotha, we are on our way to make legal buisness now. theres no reason to be mournful today.â arthur tried to cheer tommy up while giving his shoulder a pat.
tommy focused his gaze on arthur while bringing the cigarette to his lips. he blew the smoke out and said. âyes, youâre right.â he got interrupted by the cart, wich came to a stop. tommy looked around the men, who returned his glance. âalright boysâ he started. âweâre here. remember: no fighting, no guns. we are just here to buy a horse okay?â tommy inhaled to smoke of the cigarette, before he continued âlook for the grey mare okay? letâs goâ they all got out of the car and tommy crushed the cigarette on the ground.
they entered the big riding area, the auction had already started. tommy looked around the place, there were a lot of good horses, but not the one he was looking for. he stayed patient and told the boys to wait until the grey mare was for sale. he lighted another cigarette as the auctioneer suddenly said a name wich made his blood freeze. âthe next one is brutus. weâll start the bidding at 800 guineas â he said loudly, so the whole hall could hear him. tommy looked at the horse and there he was. the white stallion, you and tommy named brutus together. the stallion he gave you for your birthday ten years ago. tommy leaned over the railing and nodded to the auctioneer. âtommy what are you, doing thatâs not herâ charlie whispered to him in a low voice. tommy ignored his voice and kept nodding to the auctioneer.
âone thousand six hundred, do i hear seven?â the auctioneer asked, tommy kept nodding. âtommy you have to stop you that have that much moneyâ charlie hissed. âyes i do, iâm having this horseâ tommy said unimpressed. the bidding went to two thousand and fifty guineas, when the auctioneer knocked his hammer and officially sold brutus to tommy. âsold! to..â he said âthomas shelbyâ tommy finished, looking at the horse. the people chattered, while tommy walked out of the hall without a second thought. the boys hurried after him. âtommy what the fuck was this about, this wasnât the horse we came for!â arthur shouted after him. tommy turned around. âlisten this was the horse i gave y/n for her birthday, do you remember? if the auctioneer tells me who gave the horse to auction i could find herâ tommy explained, his voice low but still loud enough for the boys to hear. he didnât wait for any of the boys to answer and headed trough the building to get to the office, he would get the certificate.
he stormed into the office. âah mr. shelby. you bought..â the man on the chair paused for a second. âbrutus, right?â he adjusted his glasses and looked up to tommy. âyes i did.â answered impatiently before continuing asking the question he wanted to ask. âwho exactly brought brutus here?â the man looked at him surprised. âuh we donât usually get ask for the sellersâ the man answered. tommy looked at him expectant, still waiting for an answer, but his opponent remained silent. âlisten i really need to know, who brought him here, so either you tell me or iâll make you tell me, the first one is the safest optionâ tommy said annoyed, lifting his coat up to show him his gun belt. the man started shaking as soon as he saw the gun and you could see the fear on his face. âmr shelby i-â he started but stopped again, taking a moment to collect himself. âit was a woman, she came by just before the auction started and begged me to sell the horse for auctionâ the man took a deep breath and continued âsaid it reminded her of someone and she couldnât handle it anymore as much as she loved itâ he swallowed hardly and looking nervously at tommy. âshe left me a card with her adress for the paymentâ she stuttered. the man was shaking, while looking through his drawers to find the card. he handed it to tommy, who took it and immediately left his office after.
the boys were waiting outside. tommy stopped in front of them, not wanting to waste more time so he shortly explained his next moves: âalright you are going to drive back home, iâll go get my new horse and find y/nâ he was about to go when charlie stopped him. âwait tommy what about the grey horse?â tommy turned around again. âweâll find another race horse, but there are more important things right now. itâs not like we cared about legal buisness before.â he said, before going, leaving the men looking after him.
after tommy grabbed brutus he once again rode as fast as his horse could to the little town near the bidding hall, just like he did after curly told him the truth years ago. he searched through the town and stopped by a small, decent house on the edge of town. he tied brutus to the fence of your small front yard, collected all his breath and went to the door and knocked. after a few moments he heard steps nearing the door and almost lost it. the door opened and you stood in front of him. it was like the world stopped and everything was going in slow motion. you had a bright smile on your face, wich fell as soon as you saw tommy standing in front of you. a face you never thought you would see again. âtommyâ you said not noticing you had held your breath until you said his name.
ây/n please iâm so sorryâ he said still not believing you were actually standing in front of him after all those years. your mouth was dry, tears were about to fall from your eyes. âhow did you find me?â you asked stuttering, hoping this was a dream, you would wake up from soon. âi uh, saw brutus on a horse auction and i immediately bid for him as i noticed it was yours. the auctioneer gave me your adressâ tommy answered truthfully. you just looked at him, not knowing what to say so he continued: ây/n please, i searched everywhere and tried everything to find you after you leftâ his voice broke a little. you looked at him, still shocked, but your face went skeptic. âwell, i wasnât the one who wanted me to leaveâ you said, stepping back a little bit, not really wanting to continue this conversation. âi know and iâm truly sorry, i should have never mistrusted you.â he said, once again getting the now familiar goosebumps all over his body, from the guilt, that rushed through him. âwe all really do miss you, polly couldnât sleep for months and ada searched in whole england for you. arthur and john threatened to kill me, if something happened to you and they sounded really seriously aboutâ you let out a little chuckle. you missed them too, and you would kill to see them again, but that meant reconnecting with tommy and you still didnât fully move on about the whole thing so you decided to bring this dialogue to an end. âitâs really nice you stopped by, but iâm busy so goodbye i guessâ you said facepalming yourself in your thoughts, for you using such a weak excuse.
âwait, i know i really fucked up, but i really love and miss you y/n. i know iâm the last person on this world who deserves this but would you give me a second chance?â you eyed him up and down before you let out a scoff. âyes youâre right you are the last person who deserves a second chance. you know nothing about love. iâve loved you for the past 20 years and now you pull up here telling me you love me too after you believed a fucking spy over me and calling me a whore for being choked by your wife? tell polly, ada and youâre brothers that i would love to see them again and that they can visit me anytime as long as i donât ever have to face you again, thomasâ you let out all the anger that had build up within the years. tears were daring to spill from your eyes and the only movement that came into your mind, was slamming the door close in front of him. you took a moment and were shocked that you even build a whole sentence after you saw tommy. you turned around and your back rested against the door and as soon as you heard him walking away, you slowly sank down, sitting on the floor allowing the tears falling from your eyes.
you slammed the door in front of him shut. he was surprised by your sudden mood change, but knew he deserved every single word. âfuckâ he muttered under his breath. he stayed were he was, not being able to move. he wanted to knock again, he didnât want to let any possibility to get you back untried, but he knew better and harassing you. it wouldnât change your mind. he signed and walked back to brutus.
maybe one day you could forgive him, but today wasnât that day.

I couldnât settle when I went home that afternoon. My mind returned to seeing the far off look in Arthurâs eyes, he didnât want to kill that young boy I could see it in his eyes but the fact of the matter was, he did. Â A mother had lost her son.
His entire life was cut short before him because he got into a ring with an unstable minded man who couldnât get the help he needed. His poor mother, I couldnât even fathom how she must be feeling.
Chewing on the corner of my lips, I looked over at the table where Tommy was hunched over reading the paperwork he had at home. The man was a workaholic, everywhere he went, there was always something to be done.
Inhaling to myself, I picked at my fingernails before standing to my feet, walking towards the coat rack, removing the garment from the hook.
âWhere do you think you are going?â Tommy asked without so much as a glance in my direction. He just heard my feet walking away from him and called out.
âI need a walk, something to clear my head I canât settleâ I tell him wrapping the coat around my shoulders and doing up the buttons.
Tommy had tossed his pen onto his work, leaning back onto his chair with a deep sigh as he stared over at me, resting his hands on his thighs.
âTake off the coat and come hereâ He breathed out, lifting his left hand, waving me over to him. âPleaseâ He added sensing my resistance.
With a nod, I unbuttoned the coat, returning it back to the hook before making my way back towards him, my hand outstretched as I grasp his. Pulling me into his lap, I scooted further across his two thighs to get more comfortable.
âToday was an accident, ArthurâŚâ
âI know Tommy. He didnât get the help he needed after the war. Iâve heard a lot about men like him. Itâs terrifying but itâs not entirely their fault.â I nodded turning to face him, our noses briefly touching at the closeness. âIâm just grateful James didnât come back with something so terrible.â
âJames fought in the war?â He asked, reaching up tucking a strand of blond hair behind my ear.
âMmhmm so did my father. We never talked about it though. Kind of like you.â I nodded, allowing my fingers to play with the buttons of his shirt, undoing them, only to redo them straight after.
âI donât talk about the war to anyone Stace.â
âI know, James and my father were the same Tommyâ I nodded, glancing up at him through my eyelashes. âBesides, Iâve got a brief idea of your internal trauma, with your nightmares."
Tommy body language seized up at the mention of his nightmares, it was something he was ashamed of and tried his best to hide. But I saw him as a man who had been subjected to the worst kind of mental and physical torture but still managed to stand tall, a hero.
âIâm not scared Tommy, I know you expect me to be given my past. But Iâm not.â I tell him, deciding to leave the top three buttons of his shirt open. âIâve found peace in your violence. You canât scare me away.â
âI often wonder what I did to deserve someone like youâ Tommy whispered, his hand finding the side of my face. Leaning into his touch, I allowed his thumb to trace along my bottom lip.
âPolly says your mother sent me, try and make you think before you act or something."
"My mother eh?" He nodded, a sadness clouding over his eyes as he forced a small smile onto his face. âYou are a lot alike, always seeing the good in people.â. Â
âThatâs not a bad thing Tommy.â
âNo, I suppose it isnât.â He agreed, thumb now pulling at the corner of my lip.
âNot when your other half is a stubborn, pig headed gangster. Itâs nice to have some kind of balance.â
âStubborn and pig headed?â Tommy let out a deep chuckle, eyes widening at the words I had chosen to describe him. His hand dropped from my face, clasping around my hips squeezing the side playfully.
âWe balance each other out itâs okayâ I laughed, squirming away from him, only he wouldnât allow me to actual leave his knees. âWe are soulmates.â
âYou believe in that stuff?â He asked, stopping his actions to look at me with a questioning eyebrow.
âWell yeah, the is always two people just perfectly right for each other. One who balances out the other. Two halves of a whole. Yin to my yang. Or is it yang to my yin?â
âOkay, I get it.â Tommy interrupted my babbling, lacing his fingers with mine, a small smile on his face. âYouâve been spending to much time with Esme and Polly.â
Rolling my eyes at his lack of input in the conversation, I stood from his lap, making my way into the kitchen to make myself a cup of tea. As I waited for the teapot to boil, I felt his arms snake around my waist and face nuzzle into my neck.
âWhat did I say to upset you eh?â He asked, placing soft, precise kisses along the column of my neck.
âItâs not what you said it was your lack of words Tommy.â I replied, reaching into the cupboard to pull out a mug to pour the hot contents of the teapot into before setting it back on another ring so it would spill over.
âLove, I donât need to tell you youâre my other half when you already know.â He laughed in my ear. Turning around to face him, I pulled a serious look, pouting my lips to further emphasise my upset.
âItâs nice to hear Tommy.â
âThat right?â He asked, pouting his lips, eye wide. Nodding my head I waited to hear the words I wanted to hear except he dropped to his knees instead.
âTommy what are you doing?â I asked, gasping as soon as I felt his hands grasping the skirt I was wearing into a ball in his hands.
âI like to hear things to Stace, and I havenât heard those sweet moans coming from your mouth in a long time.â
âTommy we had sex last night and yesterday morning.â I laughed pushing him away, only slightly knocking him off balance. But he was determined.
âNot those moans.â He smirked, pushing the skirt over my hips. He leaned forward, just about to press his mouth against my clothed core when I slipped away from him.
Looking back at him, his hand was now placed firmly against the oven door which was holding him up. His eyes followed me across the room, a genuine look of shock betraying his once cool exterior.
âYou havenât earn it Mister besides Iâm rather tired.â
âYou cannot deny me my dinner love.â Tommy spoke, eyebrows almost reaching his hairline as he stood to his feet.
âYou need something sustainable for dinner, Iâll make it in a second.â I inform him, fighting off a yawn that had snuck up on me.
âOkay, alrighââ He nodded, hips placed firmly on his hips not making eye contact until he turned, running a wide hand over his mouth. âIâll sort the dinner, but right now yeah, I need you to lay in that bed with your legs spread. Understand?â
There was a dangerous glint in his eyes as he looked at me from across the room. I could feel my arousal already soaking my pants as he rose his eyebrows, waiting on an answer.
âYes sir.â I nodded, biting on my lip.
Glancing over my shoulder I saw his head tilt to the side watching me walk away and disappear into the bedroom, I wasnât sure why he suddenly wanted me but I wasnât going to complain.
*******
Jumping awake, I sat up glancing around the room, the place was in complete darkness. The dream I had scaring me awake. I never usually had nightmares but tonight was different. Leaning of the poor young boys fate had really gotten to me.
Clutching at my chest, I glanced down to Tommyâs sleeping frame. The blanket was reaching along his hips, allowing the deep âvâ shape to be on show.
After dinner Tommy had taken me into the bedroom doing everything in his power to make me forgot my own name never mind the events of today and at the time it worked. I had fallen asleep, I just couldnât stay asleep.
Holding the soft blanket up to my chest I grabbed Tommyâs long sleeve undershirt that rested at the end of the bed, throwing it around my shoulders before gently sliding off the bed, making my way to the kitchen and getting myself a glass of water.
Drinking back small sips, I felt a pounding headache beginning to start. Closing my eyes I tried to imagine myself in any other situation. My mind going back to the time I consider moving to Paris or Scotland, how different would be life been but I knew I wouldnât be happy.
Despite what he and his family did, I loved Tommy. I loved him more than I ever believed to be possible and it all started that fateful day at the betting shop. I felt a smile growing on my face as I remember being completely taken back by his eyes, still as blue, still as mesmerising as that day.Â
Placing the half full glass back on the counter, memories of Tommy and I filled my head, most making me smile, others having me realise how strong we truly were, standing by one another at the toughest of times.
I remembered my first night encountering a nightmare of Tommyâs, it was terrifying. His body started to thrash against the bed, a yell escaping his lips bringing me out of my sleep
Since spending the my first night with Tommy, I had been spending a few nights between my brothers and here, not wanting to overstay my welcome at either home. I would admit I rather enjoyed spending the time in Tommyâs more as the feelings he was able to pull from me was something I was becoming addicted to.
I held the blanket close to my neck enjoying the sleep I was having when I was awoken by a the sound of an almighty scream. It was a scream of deep pain and anguish.
Feeling movement beside me, I opened my eyes noticing Tommy was thrashing about the bed, arms reaching in the air for something or someone. His hands were tense, fingers clasping around nothing.
âNOOOâ Tommy roared out, his voice was almost unrecognisable as he wrestled with the air.
Pushing myself up off the bed, realising what was happening I leaned carefully next to him, mindful not to get in the way of his arms as I gently pushed my fingers through his dark thick locks. Stroking his hair, softly while âsshingâ him as best I could without getting to close.
âYour alright Tommy, your home.â I soothed hoping that somewhere deep inside of him he could hear me. âYour home, your in bed with me, Stace.â I continued.
My words seemed to have a calming affect on him as the thrashing began to stop, his arms began to fall from the air and onto the bed. Taking that as a good sign, I scooted closer to him, slightly pressing my body against his.
âIâm here Tommy, you are safeâ I whispered, pressing a small kiss to his cheek but that was a mistake. His hands wrapped around my upper arms, holding me tightly that I was sure would leave bruises before tossing me to the side of the bed, my back hitting off the wall.
âStace, fuck.â Tommy spat out. His eyes were so lost, so dark, it was like Tommy no longer existed. He started grabbing at his hair, pulling the longer sides with a far off dazed look in his eyes as he stared at the wall in his bedroom, mumbling something under his breathe.
Standing to his feet, he began to pace the room running hand after hand down his face before finally standing still. Hands pressed against his hips as he stared up towards the ceiling.
Cautiously sliding off the bed, I approached the man in front of me, his long sleeved undershirt falling over my intimate areas as I stood next to him. Wrapping my hands around his waist, I felt him stiffen beneath me but I refused to let him go.
âYour safe Tommy, your safeâ I spoke, loud enough so he could hear it but quiet enough so the others in the house wouldnât know I was here.
âYou shouldnât be here.â Tommy spoke, his voice returning back to the one I found myself falling for. âIâm notâŚI could hurt you.â
âYou would never hurt me intentionally Tommy.â I tell him, resting my chin on his bare chest, my eyes falling on his Romani sun before travelling up to his eyes. âIâm here because I want to be, what happened tonight will not scare me away.â
Smiling at the memory, I lifted my hand taking the flower pendant he had given me for Christmas in my hand, squeezing it. As much as he showed the world he was well put together, he was still broken, still in need of so much love.
With that thought in mind, I emptied the rest of the water into the sink, placing the glass on the draining board before carefully making my way back into the bedroom.Â
Looking over at Tommyâs sleeping form, I felt myself becoming more determined than ever to protect him, from what I didnât know but I knew I couldnât be without him. I couldnât let him lose himself like Arthur.Â
Slipping into the bed next to him, I cuddled into his side. Tommy threw his arm over my shoulders allowing me to come closer, snuggling my face on his bare chest before laying my head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat.Â
âYou alright love?â Tommy asked, voice rugged with sleep.Â

Hereâs what Iâve learned in the 3 weeks that Iâve been working for the Shelby Family.
John is my closest friend in Small Heath. He warmed up to me the fastest, and I swear sometimes I have to remind myself that heâs not my actual brother. He laughs with me and tries his best to not make me feel like a complete outsider in Shelby Limited.
Arthur is a massive softie. He is by far the roughest looking of the Shelby boys, but he has the softest heart. He drinks a lot, sometimes too much, and I always know to look for the signs that its time to start watering down his Vodkaâs with water. Heâs usually too drunk to notice. Sometimes he stays so late that I walk him most of the way home just to be sure he doesnât get himself into any trouble.Â
Polly, the most fierce and strong woman I have ever met, took a little longer to warm up to me. But one day when she caught me making sure Arthur got home safely, and invited me in fora cup of tea. Since then, she has been insisting that I start joining them occasionally for dinner. Iâve been declining because of one person.
That is Thomas Shelby.
Where do I start. If Thomas Shelby wants something, everyone around him will jump to make it happen. He instills fear wherever he goes. Iâve never known him to smile or laugh like the others do. He drinks a lot, Iâm always bringing him a fresh glass to their private room in the Garrison, but he doesnât lose his head like Arthur does. Tommy has a tight grip on everyone and everything, including himself.Â
On my rounds, making sure that everyone has been taken care of during their family meetings, he refuses to join in on any jokes and playful moments that I have with the others. In fact, when he sees me getting closer with the Shelbyâs, his face grows even more sour. If thatâs even possible.Â
And those eyes. He stares. A lot. Not longingly. Not anything. Just a thousand mile stare, straight through to my core. As much as I try to ignore that heâs there, I can always feel his eyes on me. Like Iâm being watched. My every move being picked apart and analysed in his mind.Â
Today was different. Initially it was the same old. Bring them drinks, laugh with the boys, try to help them pick which horses are going to win in their races. And pretend that Tommy doesnât despise every second of it.Â
After rushing around for an hour tending to the lunch time rush, I realise their drinks must be getting low.Â
âAlright boys, this rounds on the houseâ I joke as I walk into their private room. For the Shelbyâs everything is on the house. Suits. Guns. Drugs. Drinks. Women.Â
âThese drinks will be on you if I lose this bet Zâ John teases back, listening to the radio intently to find out whether the Horse I told him to bet on has one its races.Â
âAnd Iâve never lost one yet have I!â I retort, topping up his Whisky and setting down a plate of bread and butter for them to snack on. Something to soak up all the alcohol.Â
I dare to glance over at Tommy, who unsurprisingly is already watching me with an extra disapproving look.Â
âCan I get you another drink Tommy?â I ask, pretending to not notice the daggers heâs shooting my way.
He nods in response, and I pour him a whiskey âI could make you that drink from a few weeks backâŚâ I offer, trying my luck. Maybe today he will entertain me.Â
âCan I see you outside?â He snaps suddenly, and I swallow hard.
Fuck.Â
The last few weeks have felt like I was walking on a fine line with Tommy. I have proved myself time and time again. But he still despises the air that I breathe. Maybe I was getting too comfortable with the boys. Maybe he thinks Iâm trying to manipulate and trick them all. God knows what he thinks Iâm doing. Whatever it is, he doesnât like it.Â
I follow him out of the room and into a quiet area of the Pub.Â
Without any warning, or lead up, he turns to me and looks me dead in the eye. âI know the boys like you. Trust you even. But I do notâÂ
The words hit me like a freight train.Â
I knew he seemed different today. Like he was extra disgusted with everyone and everything. These words, he had been sitting on for a while. Keeping them inside as he watched me and scrutinised my every move for weeks. I could tell by the venom that he said them with.Â
I want to fight back.
I want to remind him of everything Iâve been doing for this place. The business Iâve been bringing in. The countless times Iâve looked out for Arthur and his alcoholic tendencies. Making sure he got home safe. And that no one took advantage of a drunken Shelby brother. The business Iâve heard them discussing that Iâve turned a blind eye to. That Iâve never uttered a word of to anyone. The things Iâve heard and seen, that have slowly been revealed to me about Shelby Limited that Iâve never questioned.Â
But instead I draw in a deep breath.
âOkay Tommyâ I sigh. My brain goes back and forth frantically as I decide to let go of what Iâve been holding onto for weeks. âI donât know how long itâs going to take. Or what I have to do. And to be honest I donât care anymore. If you never trust me, then so be it. But you donât have to be so cruel. Iâm just here to pour the beer, remember?â
âThen how about you just stick to doing that, hey?â He spits back.
âI feel for you Tommyâ I narrow my eyes, staring him down the same way he has been doing to me for weeks.Â
âYou donât know meâÂ
âIâve tried. But you wonât let me. And Iâm starting to think I donât want to anymoreâ I shake my head âBut I see you. Iâve been watching you too, Tommy. You want to know what I see? I see a man who has everything, and a man who has nothing. You have everything and nothingâ
He freezes. And there it is. The first time Iâve seen something in his eyes besides hatred. Itâs still shrouded. Still unclear. But itâs something. Like heâs been exposed. Cut open. Like someone just dared to say the first real thing he has heard in a very long time. Someone made him feel.Â
âBut hey, Iâll get back to pouring the beer, shall I?â I finish, brushing past him to continue serving customers.Â
I start taking orders and pouring drinks with a racing heart and trembling hands. I couldnât believe what had just come out of my mouth. I donât know everything about the Shelbyâs, but Iâve seen and heard enough to know that people who speak to them like that do not last very long in Small Heath.Â
I dare to take a quick glance at him, to find him still frozen in place. Staring at the spot I had just been standing. As if heâs still reliving the moment. Reliving what I had said.Â
Fuck.Â
I expect him to turn around and fire me on the spot. Maybe even part of me hoped he would, so I wouldnât have to face the wrath that I know is coming after I dared to peak back to Thomas Shelby. If I thought he hated me already, I could only imagine the hell he would rain down on me after that. I was prepared for him to make my life a living hell.Â
But instead, he adjusts the hat on his head, straightens his shoulders, and leaves the Garrison.Â
