Ever wondered what kind of lamp this is? Probably not, but I tell you anyway. These types of lamps are called Bouillotte lamps. They originate from France.
During the 18th century, a card game with the same name became popular among the upper class. Its popularity lasted until the next century. During these card games, the lamp stood at the center of the round Bouillotte table and served as the main source of light.
Bouillotte lamps were often made of brass and consisted of two to four candle brackets, which extend from a round base. The lampshades were often made from lacquered metal, known as tôle, that could accommodate the heat of the burning candles. They are opaque on the outside but highly reflective on the inside and can be raised and lowered to ease the insertion of new candles or focus the light. The new ones are electric, though.
