You should never ever let your idolization of a person and assumption that you can befriend them blind you to their behaviors and blatant bigotry. Just because you can text them, just because you had a conversation with them and they were sweet to your face, does not absolve them of their guilt. You are deliberately gaslighting yourself for a semblance of fame in proximity. You are making up lies to help them, knowing it is wrong and that you are helping the problem, despite being of the group that they are targetting with said bigotry.
