One of my favorite things about Epic the Musical is that despite Odysseus being irreversibly changed by his struggles, Penelope reveals to him that he’s still the same person deep down
He was changed, yes, but not lost. If he truly was not the man she knew, he wouldn’t be so passionate about the olive tree. And she knew that. The test was not to verify his identity for herself but instead to prove to him that he’s still Odysseus
“Only my husband knew that, so I guess that makes him you”
It’s a sign that he’s free. Finally free from the bloodshed that plagued him for 20 years. That he no longer needs to be ruthless, because the fighting is over
