On November 29 and 30, Studio 96 became home for about 30 young people, mostly in their late teens and early 20s, who took part in a 24-hour “Thinkathon.”
“Our Digital Future, C'est Ici” was organized by the Goethe-Institut Montreal, as well as the Goethe-Institut Toronto, Edmonton's NextGen, European Union in Canada, and the CJD NDG, a non-profit organization in Montreal that helps young people enter the job market.
I was asked to speak because of my work in community and digital media, as well as community organizing. My topics were online hate, hate groups, and bullying in the digital age, particularly how to deal with it when encountered online and how to protect themselves (and each other) from such behaviours. I was also asked lots of questions about the current state of the media, and how the digital age has changed how we get our information and how we interact with social media and the Internet. Here are some of my talking points.
Ook The Civic City doet mee aan DDW 2015, die loopt van 17 tot 25 oktober 2015 in Eindhoven. We doen dat vanuit de tijdelijke ontwerpplek op het Edisonplein 65. Hier worden de resultaten van de gesprekken, ideeën en discussies met de bewoners gepresenteerd, worden sensor-rijke prototypen getoond, en een aantal relevante projecten gedemonstreerd die de organiserende studio’s npk design, LUSTlab en info.nl al gedaan hebben.
The Civic City onderzoekt de nieuwe rol van participerend ontwerpen in de smart city en paste het toe in Woensel-West. Startpunt van het project is het geloof dat de smart city niet alleen gebaseerd moet zijn op efficiëntie motieven, maar op werkelijke motieven die het leven in een wijk verbeteren. The Civic City ontwikkelde hiervoor zogenaamde thinkathons waarin met bewoners gezamenlijk slimme ideeën voor concrete vragen uit de wijk werden ontwikkeld. Deze ideeën worden vervolgens omgevormd tot opdrachten vanuit de burgers aan het ontwerpteam van The Civic City. De ontwerpers gaan samen met de bewoners aan de slag om een volgende invulling en uitwerking te maken van de ideeën voor de wijk. Einddoel van het project is deze ideeën en vooral het proces van samenwerking te delen met de Nederlandse ontwerp-gemeenschap.
