So Iāve completed the Sign series for now, mainly due to the expensive paper and the cheap pens Iāve been using for it suddenly disappearing from the shelves in my area. But just as much because I think Iāve gone as far with that as I can with my limited ability, and Iāve learned plenty from the process of making those drawings that I can use in other series in the future. If I have a future.Ā
Of all the projects Iāve worked on Sign has been the one Iāve been most pleased with, Thereās something satisfying about taking ideas and styles you've been playing with since age 12 and using them in a focused way as a slightly more experienced adult. Taking one aspect of what Iāve been doing to itās logical conclusion.Ā
Iāve also completed one more series of 40 drawings based on the outside of the human body as well as about half of another series that Iām starting to get excited about. For a long time Iāve been trying to find a way to express something about the way things are here in the UK and with these two seriesā I might be on to something.Ā
With the first, which I might call Situ for some reason, I wanted to do something more with the distorted-contorted bodies that I like to doodle sometimes. Though I didnāt do as well as I wanted to and I really learned more about what not to do than anything else. With the second, which doesnāt have a name yet, Iām able to use those same bodies in simplified architecture, painful confinement and isolation. I live in a post-industrial part of the country, Pitchshifter town, not far from Godflesh land and that has been a source of inspiration. Itās dark in a way that Sign and Situ arenāt and I hope that with it I can say something about how bad things have gotten in a very general way.
And It has gotten bad, Brexit has driven a wedge into my family that nobody is brave enough to talk about, my town has become just as hostile as it was when I was a teenager. These divisions are with us now, forever. Just as they are in America where the culture wars never ended, hell the civil war never ended over there. Our next Thatcher, or our own Trump is on the way, and I keep thinking that as cartoonishly villainous as our leaders look itās just a prelude to something worse.
I think thereās going to be another war.
